A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

what did you wrench on today??

This is an interesting window into the life of a professional tech... From a distance, it's compelling because you seem so engauged in the work that it sort of pulls me in when I read about it.

what did you wrench on today??

I'm pulling out my hair just reading that... Perhaps pull the battery again with the known good switch installed so it resets the fault? Note: I'm outa my depth on that one. Today I sanded 6 lbs of bondo, rust and house paint off of an otherwise rasonably sound GS550E tank... I'll never figure...

    Would you rather a z550 or a 454 LTD?

If those are the only bikes available and you are a smaller rider looking for cheap transportation, the LTD makes more sense, parts are everywhere and cheap. If it's about anything else? The Z500 is nifty... (If you are taller, forget the 454 at once, if you need a small non-GS low-slung...

what did you wrench on today??

I've narrowed it down to coming from either a 1982 GS750T, 1980750L or 1980gs550L. Had acumulated a lage collection of parts bikes while fixing up a few others and at one point just started stipping them down into save or sell/swap boxes, some orrigins were forgoten in the process.

Valve clearance, Valve seats, small oil leak, low compression, please help.

As for the oil, it's time for the next compression check to compare to the first An oily plug can indicate time for rings or a failed valve guide. I think all Suzuki 4 stroke engines had hardened seats to accomodate unleaded fuel, hopefully someone here can confirm. To little clearance will...

Hi All! Signing on from Jersey

thats a good looking little scoot... one thing I would confirm is that it has a good title. CT does not require a title for a bike of that age but New Jersey might. Before any road trips, be sure the paperwork is congruent with your needs. If the paper doesn't align, there are other bikes out...

what did you wrench on today??

Rolled my GS550 spare-part-pile-project out of the barn and fired it up for the first time... and got to hear the vintage V&H at last! Some tuning and wiring still to go but that, first succesful light up was pretty exciting

New forum member - new 850G owner!

In case you miss this in the carb wanted thread... that is why you are overflowing. A break on the top of the other post is not so bad becaust the pin will stay and the stop will still function. On the stop side, a top break means the float travels to far and the valve falls too far out of...

    Engine misfires

How old is the battery? Have you checked it and the bike's charging performance from idle to the idle where it starts to falter in the rpm range? The bike has 77k on it... with 77K a compression check makes good sense. Did to check the air-filter box for obstructions? Did you try to run it...

1980 GS550E frame differences: What do I have here?

You can grind off the upper mount and weld a post in the "hole" where the E tank post should be. The hole goes right through so it's easy to square up one post that goes right through...

1980 GS550E frame differences: What do I have here?

It is an L. 1980 L frames are stamped 550E, my gal's is anyway. I'm pretty sure her forward tank mounts are also up on the backbone like that too... I'll pull it later to doublecheck if you need confimation.

The new member of the stable - 1980 GS550E

It's also got roller bearings in the stem (improvement ) and... the 1980 petcock (mixed feelings on this one) In general it's nice to have a more modern tap that you don't have to remember to to turn off but, make an extra effort not to run out of gas because the prime function seems flawed...

Need tips / tricks on paint removal

Not sure if this is some kind of canuk humor or not I have always been nervous to cover old air-cooled engine paint with more paint because it might reduce the motors capacity to scrub heat... is this being overly cautious?

GS550 - mechanical slide carb and CV carb interchangeability.

Best way is a head-swap. The good news? It's easy & 550 heads are plentiful... (the better way is an airbox, tuned CV's on a 550 trump VMs 9 days out of 10. My gal and I have five 550's... VM's for show, CV's for go)

GS550 - mechanical slide carb and CV carb interchangeability.

The bolt holes are significantly off… and the rack spacing would be a total miss-match. GS550 VM on left, CV right

GS550E Doesn't Function Well - Motorcycle shop "Stumped"

Consider this a thought question more than a critique... considering the precise weight of the slides, spring calculated resistance all in relation to vacuum lifting said slide ... would adding wieght to that slide nulify or at least dull the intended effect? Perhaps nylon washers might be a...

I'm ready to jam the Kerker so full of steel wool that I can see it coming out the back of the carbs.

1978 GS550 all stock jetting to remove lean conditions

Do you have a stock exhaust without leaks? That would also be helpful to know. (Not that it precludes a valve adjustment, just useful info if trying to clear a lean condition... )
