A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

    Valves n Shims...

Thanks tkent02. The torque pull is fun but 8000 rpm is where the real enjoyment is. :D Mvalenti, 200 lb diet? Dang, so you can pick it up with one hand and move it around like a bicycle now, right? :p

    Valves n Shims...

Let us know what you find out mvalenti. Sounds like you'll be in good shape if you hold the throttle open while checking. Certainly adjust your valves next. Re-check the compression if you're curious. I checked my compression the other day. I started at low rpm, low speed in 2nd gear...

    Valves n Shims...

You said it well. The valve wears in and the thick shim hangs it open, reducing compression. Speaking of which, if when you check your compression the numbers are good then I wouldn't worry about cleaners or additives. The way I clean up carbon is to run to 9500 r's at every shift. That...

    oil passage not making sense

Thanks Spyug. The mistake sucks but it happens. This is not repetitious work like an assembly line where if you miss a step or put something on wrong your brain stops you immediately. All good though, no repercussions regarding the bike. The only cost was a few gray hairs and pressure in...

    Valves n Shims...

The valves do tighten up, yes. When you adjust your clearances you almost always reduce the shim thickness, allowing the valve to seat completely. If you're at a point where you're putting in a really thin shim, then maybe you would consider doing valves. From what I've read around here, it...

    Valves n Shims...

It's this guy around here with no name. I think he's some kind of GS wizard or something. ;) Thanks Eric. Somehow I managed to keep oil away. The bucket tool never slipped. Ghost, I found the valve check/adjust to be simple and even somewhat enjoyable. :-$ The worst part was...

    Valves n Shims...

Agreed. Measure the two adjacent clearances then take one of the shims out. Write the shim size down and measure it. Put it back in and do the adjacent valve shim. Repeat 4 times. Make a chart like this or get a spreadsheet from Steve.

    gs550 stalls when warmed up

+1 on this too. Visually checking connections is not good enough. Get instructions for the multimeter and use it. If you get confused as to what settings to use for a particular test, ask us. We'll even send a picture if need be. You never said when it's warm if there is no spark from all 4...

    oil passage not making sense

Update - oil pressure good !!!!!!!!!!! Update - oil pressure good !!!!!!!!!!! Although it never appeared that I had lost oil pressure, here's what I found: The week before while taking the sending unit out I noticed there were scrapes along the wall of the case in 2 spots. It appeared that...

    1983_GS750E - Rebuild

Nice work GK and good perseverance. Glad to see you got to the point where it makes actual vroom vroom noises. :p By the way, I love the way it sounds. Enjoy your rides.

    Damn you Sears!

That's good. Shows how precise those things were machined that it's hard to tell there's more than one. Also shows how superb the engineering was that it requires such a small clearance. Have fun. Strangely enough I enjoy checking the valves and working on wiring. :-&

    oil change time

Ha! I live 3.5 miles from work. The ride home is a bit longer, maybe 30 miles or so. :D Good solution.

    gs550 stalls when warmed up

Oops Mr. Nessism, didn't know I was writing some of the same stuff you did. Suzi, these people here are as close to experts as you get. It seems like they can rebuild these things with their eyes closed, or while talking sports, or while reading a book. :-\\\ Simply amazing people here...

    gs550 stalls when warmed up

Your ignitor or signal generator may be overheating and failing to work until cool. When you have no spark, is it all 4 plugs? For your spark intensity: (Would not worry about this until you get the no spark issue figured out.) First check the voltage to the coils. There are several...

First Street Bike Project - with a few questions

Hi Sci, I had the 30 yr. old shocks like you and one was blown out. I ordered some new ones from Cycle ReCycle Part II for about 100. This is for the complete shocks/progressive springs setup. They are firm for someone my weight (160 lbs.) on the lowest setting but feel fantastic nonetheless...

    Fuse Panel

That's great advice from these superb people here. Yes you must get those connections clean because resistance = heat. A quick way to tell how bad is to measure voltage before and after connections (or one side of fuse then the other). Have fun and enjoy the outcome of reliable circuits.

Thanks. I'm trying to figure this out.

First Street Bike Project - with a few questions

Some of the stock plastic wiring connectors were brittle junk. If they wouldn't come apart easily I just threw them away and started fresh. At some junctions, like where the coil feed is, I connected the wires individually instead of a factory style pin block. This came in handy when I did...

First Street Bike Project - with a few questions

Thanks for the paint info. The master cylinder says Aisin 2 5/8 on the bottom side. I'm quite sure it's the original. On a side note: I am the 2nd owner, the original owner is my next door neighbor. He told me that he bought this bike dirt cheap, around $1500. It was still in the crate...
