All new forum registrations must be activated via email before you have full access to the forum.

A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Why not check the charging system before you spend $200 on parts you may not need?

One common failure mode for the igniters on these old GSes is that they'll stop sparking when they get hot. More so than the coils I would suspect the iginter. My 550LZ did exactly that. The answer was a Dyna S DS3-2, which runs about $120. The coil relay mod helped with cold starting, as there was too much voltage drop from the battery to the coil.

One reason I think that igniters get damaged is because the stock Suzuki R/R allows the voltage to get too high. I did replace with a Shindengen R/R, an SH541-12 if I remember correctly. The stock R/R would put out 15.5V at 5kRPM, whereas the Shindengen clamps it down at about 14.6V.

Edit: just checked, yes the R/R is a SH541

I'll second this ... Basscliff left you a post with ALL the answers to the questions you have regarding proper testing of the charging (and other) system(s).

Spend a little time clicking those links and following those guides and you'll have the bike sorted out in no time, and without spending a dime more than you have to on replacement parts. Don't make the same mistake others have made by throwing money at the bike without actually knowing if that money needs to be spent.

+1 on this too. Visually checking connections is not good enough. Get instructions for the multimeter and use it. If you get confused as to what settings to use for a particular test, ask us. We'll even send a picture if need be.

You never said when it's warm if there is no spark from all 4 plugs or just one.
Check your electrical system thoroughly using all the info provided before burning up parts unnecessarily.

Heed Nessism's signature line, "To measure is to know." This is especially true when dealing with 30+ yr. old weather exposed electrical systems.
