First Street Bike Project - with a few questions

Ha!!! Sci, The old bike is looking stunning. Your work is impressive. I'm glad to hear that it started. :dancing::dancing::dancing: I surely like the way you took the project, keeping a lot of it stock looking but adding some flair in the form of the sweet tank, fenders and frame covers. Then...

First Street Bike Project - with a few questions

Cool new bike you have there. It's good that you can ride now while working on the old GS and then have 2 to choose from when you go riding. It looks like your new toy can gobble up the miles with ease. The 550 is great on slow speed stuff and loves to lean. I forgot to hook up the cable...

    Oil pressure switch operation

Oh the ribs. Bummer. The racing sounds like a bunch of fun though. It's a nice small oil pressure gauge that mounts to the right side. You can see it on your project thread, last page where I posted pictures to show the shocks. It sits nicely just above the ignition cover. I could have...

    Oil pressure switch operation

Cool Sci. A simple fix is nice to have. I was wondering where you'd been. Mine stayed lit constantly so I went through the troubleshooting steps of making sure there was good oil pressure. The plunger on the switch worked fine but the brass washer that grounds when there is no pressure...

    1 and 4 run, 2 and 3 have issues

You might still want to check into that Loctite Freeze stuff. I have a co-worker that used it or something similar and said it worked great. Maybe use the freeze stuff then spray some more penetrating oil in there. If it works you'll save good money from having to get those stuck bolts...

    Possible Clutch Drag '77 GS550

For a while there I had some difficulty adjusting my clutch too. It was good then the next day it seemed to drag more, but never enough to pull the bike if I was stopped in 1st gear. It might have to do with oil temp or oil quality. Maybe it had at some point dumped excess fuel into the...

850 loses power at high speed after heated up.

Good news redfenix. Now hopefully you can work on things one at a time as miles accrue since you've done this big chunk of repairs to get rolling. Enjoy the good running bike. Maybe your heat wave will eventually lift and you can ride comfortably all day unlike me here.

    1 and 4 run, 2 and 3 have issues

Well that sucks Big Red. I have heard a lot of good on using oversize drain plugs if you plan on leaving the pan bolted up. It's too bad it won't come off without removing the exhaust. I was real lucky. There was clearance to take the pan off on mine. If you do plan on removing the pan I suggest...

    1 and 4 run, 2 and 3 have issues

First of all, congratulations on your baby girl. How awesome. Enjoy your time off. I don't know what your 3rd wire could be unless someone ran a new power wire and left the old one in place. What colors of wire? As long as the coils are getting good voltage you should be able to switch...

    Dyna S install- help needed

His wiring setup is a bit different considering it was a points ignition before. I think any switched ignition wire would be a good choice. It surely doesn't hurt to verify it's a good feed and your post is a good reminder of that. I hooked mine to the orange/white at the old ignitor plug. This...

    Dyna S install- help needed

Bummer on the stator. I don't know how it would affect cranking though. What is the voltage across your battery with the key on? If too low then the coils and your Dyna are definitely not getting enough. What are the voltages at the coils, key on? Try this with the charger hooked up and kicking...

    stripped oil drain plug hole

I agree. This is easy for them and some shops are very reasonable. I worried about using an oversized plug and screwing up so I took it to a local machine shop. They put in a NAPA version of a TimeSert for $35 total. They made sure it was flush with the inside of the pan. It's peace of mind...

    1981 or 1982 Suzuki GS550m Katana

Another 550 Katana lives. :D With some patience going through the electrical and fuel system (carbs, lines, tank) it should run great. The necessary info is listed in the posts above me. Mine leaks a bit, sure. :-# No complaints otherwise as it always starts and goes. I just replaced...

    Dyna S install- help needed

What is the battery voltage with the key on and when trying to start? It may be falling short with a load on it. There's not much play between starting and nothing at all, so that .5 volt or more loss could be your issue here. We'll hear what the outcome is when it's recharged. You can get...

Anyone replace that rubber grommet that seals stator leads?

Strange it's not offered by OEM suppliers for your bike. It is for mine, costed $1.60 via GSSuzuki. Part #12 under generator. Would it fit? I haven't used it yet or looked to see if it's meant for the bundle or separate wires. Just throwing this out there but it sounds like there's a good...

    1983_GS750E - Rebuild

There are surely good similarities shared between both your build GK and GT's. Joe, perfect timing for that hilarious post. Come on GK, we're all getting antsy here. :p

    82 850GL Resto...here we go

Cool GT. It's nice to see you approaching the finish line. I plan on rebuilding my brakes next month and will definitely try that little trick. Yes indeed. How simple and great ingenuity.

    1 and 4 run, 2 and 3 have issues

I'm wondering about this whole ignition issue. Do you have a timing light? It's what I used to see that my spark was weak at higher rpm or under load. This whole thing reminds me of bad gas. Might be the 1-4 spark is a bit stronger to burn the mixture, just guessing. What color is the...

850 loses power at high speed after heated up.

Not a bad idea to wait on lining the tank if it's not too bad. Maybe a good cleaning will do for now and winter for the Kreem. You have a few good projects on the your list and it should run like a champ now. Keep us posted.

    1 and 4 run, 2 and 3 have issues

My suggestion on the screws was to keep the plugs from getting sooty at warm-up if these were too rich. Good point on troubleshooting one thing at a time. So Big Red, just how good is your spark and what color is it? Have you attempted swapping the coils as suggested? You may want to expose...
