DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Oil cooler kit for 1980 GS1000?

I can't come up with any reason you would want a thermostat. Cooler oil is always a good thing, where adding complexity to your oiling system is a bad thing.

    Rear brakes not working

My personal rule when dealing with almost 50 year old vehicles that I want to drive: When there's a brake issue, and I don't know the last time someone (me) has gone through the brakes thoroughly, I go through the brakes thoroughly. The service manual will call for service and/or replacement of...

    Replacing a "Spark Unit" / "Igniter" / CDI (OKI MPS-200) on a '80 CB650

Most of those cheapo 6 pin CDI s for the Marelli scooters are AC and run directly off the stator, not rectified. The problem with "car" ignitions is they either require a distributor or the firing order is wrong. There's a Dyna 6 box that has twin ignition, NOT CHEAP.

    SH775 question

The stator is the stationary part of the alternator... or generator ... and as long as you have at least two phases of AC power (you do) a SH775 will work

    000,003 mile 79 1000S on BaT

My point being: A $32,000 GS1000S shouldn't have a toggle switch with a big red wire zip tied on.

Yeah. That's MA2, MA is still 12-1300ppm ZDDP

    Informative video on motorcycle oil

It's not the too much zinc, it's the lack of viscosity stabilizers that is the problem. Break in oil is designed to last an hour. Regular motorcycle oil has lots of ZDDP, about 12-1300PPM... and viscosity stabilizers, and anti foam and ....

    I am stymied....vacuum leak.

If you think you have a vacuum leak: take a propane torch, not lit, and poke it in around where it could be leaking vacuum while the bike is idling. If you find a vacuum leak the idle will go up.

    Plug oiling up

If the bike puts out white smoke on heavy deceleration (engine braking) you probably need valve seals

    No oil pressure

You can prime the oil pump through the oil pressure sender hole. Remove the sender and SLOWLY pour oil down the hole. Then remove the gallery plug on the right side, turn over the motor and see if you have oil flow. Remember this motor doesn't have a lot of pressure

    Stater and Reg/Rect problems on 82 GS650Ez

.... well except you're putting put the regulator in series with the circuit instead of parallel to the circuit. It's not a big wiring change, but it's a big electrical change. You're moving where the regulator is in the circuit, which makes a more balanced load on the stator... and less heat...

    Stater and Reg/Rect problems on 82 GS650Ez

You're right. I didn't look close enough When the lights are off, the third leg off the stator gets disconnected from the rectifier. Turn the lights on, the W/G gets connected to W/R, which goes to the rectifier. With the headlight ON, you have a three phase alternator, with the headlight off...

    Stater and Reg/Rect problems on 82 GS650Ez

Not so much the R/R, more how the R/R was wired. Look at a wiring diagram. In the stator all three legs/phases are connected in the middle. This is called a delta, and it means the electrical potential on all three legs HAS to be the same... they're connected. Trace the wiring away from the...

    Stater and Reg/Rect problems on 82 GS650Ez

That's not how electricity works. You can't "return" current to the stator. If you were to put a AC amp clamp on one of the stator wires, it would show the presence of AC energy, but AC doesn't have a direction, only potential. In DC power the electrons travel from the negative TO the positive

    Stater and Reg/Rect problems on 82 GS650Ez

Errrr. NO Generators output DC current. (not really but close enough for us) Alternators output AC or alternating current, hence "alternators". Alternators need a rectifier to convert AC to DC to charge the battery. Generators don't... MY GS has a rectifier. An alternator that is regulated by...
