If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

    1980 GS1000 no-start

Hi all, I'm stumped and at the end of my rope. Hoping I can get a sanity check and some troubleshooting advice. The subject is a 1980 GS1000. Stock, with CV carbs. My bike began running poorly around 2020. In an effort to get it running well I pulled the carbs off the bike and followed the...

    how hot?

Hi all, Just went through the CV carbs on my '80 GS1000, and have returned them to the bike. It runs! However, the pipes on 1,3, and 4 get very hot very quickly. I can't touch them after about 45 seconds. The bike stumbles if I twist the throttle. Am I right to assume they are running lean...

    1980 gs1000 weak/no spark

Hi folks. I've got a 1980 GS1000G. Trying to get it started this spring and encountering problems. The bike will occasionally start but will usually die quickly. Sometimes it is only running on one or two cylinders. I've checked for spark with a plug on the head and sometimes will get spark...

    Stupid jet question

Hi guys. I've got an 1980 gs1000 with CV carbs. The current main jet has 115 stamped on it. The pipe and pod thread suggests moving 3 jet sizes for pods but I'm unsure what exactly that means. I notice the jets are available in 5 number increments. Am I right to assume 3 sizes up is a 130...

Bought RR on Ebay, did I mess up?

Looks identical to the generic one I got. Can you return it?

    stator resistance values

Im just happy its all working again. I also installed a gammatronix led voltage monitor, so I should know about an issue if one occurs in the future. Again, thanks for all the help and an outstanding resource here.

    stator resistance values

Hi all, after thorough testing and troubleshooting, I thought you'd appreciate an update for posterity. The regulator rectifier was faulty, and I received a replacement under warranty from RM Stator. Their service has been excellent. POS, you presume I did not follow the quick test and other...

    stator resistance values

Thanks for the useful feedback. The meter resistance is .05, and it does have fresh batteries. That's still 1.3 ohms of resistance, too high according to the stator papers. I did unplug the stator before testing. I'll have another go with another multimeter, though. Unfortunately, after...

    stator resistance values

Hi guys, I'm trying to determine if my stator is pooched. 1.8 ohms resistance between all three legs. According to the quick test guidelines, that's a bad stator. However, they are all still open loop, and produce over 50 volts when the engine is revved past 5000. What is happening when the...

Fuse box is crap - Better option?

I got a hella one off of amazon for about 8 bucks. Planning to wire it up like ShadowFocus has done, should be light years ahead of the melted original.

GS1000 muffler opinions & exhaust pipe diameter

Thanks guys. Looking to stick with the dual exhaust, but the diameter measurement at least lets me start looking at options.

GS1000 muffler opinions & exhaust pipe diameter

Hi folks, looking to get some new mufflers for my GS1000. Any opinions on a set that will lose the tameness of the (ridiculously quiet) stockers without making me deaf? Hoping to get something around a 20 inch length, the stock muffs are 27's and just too long. Has anyone tried Emgo stuff? Their...

Looks great. Is it just me or do the L's have a smaller rear wheel?

    big backfire, why?

Good points, all. I wondered about a hanging valve, as the valvetrain is pretty much the last part of the bike I haven't gone through. Cracking open the top end is the next thing on the to-do list. Is a sticking valve symptomatic of a larger problem, or just a thorough cleaning? What do you guys...

    big backfire, why?

Hi guys, I was out for a ride last night on my 1980 GS1000G and got on the throttle in second gear in a rather spirited manner. Around 5 or 6000 rpm, the bike had a big backfire, with flames blasting out the exhaust and a huge bang. I immediately pulled the clutch and went for the shoulder...

what to do with the orange, orange/green wires on SH775 install?

You're right, I had neglected to tape back an unused power wire and it shorted. D'oh. I edited the post as soon as I noticed! However, my garbage harbour freight multimeter is garbage, and was reading wrong. When I tried today it was with a friend's meter today and everything checked out, so no...

what to do with the orange, orange/green wires on SH775 install?

Good news, I slept on it, and checked it out this morning. Not sure if my multimeter is screwey or if I was mistaken last night, but this morning, everything is working and doing the proper voltages. Thanks again for the helpful advice. Now to get out the soldering iron and make these...

what to do with the orange, orange/green wires on SH775 install?

Ok, ive messed something up. New stator and rr are in, but the voltage at the battery is showing 18 to nearly 20v and idle and revving respectively. Not sire if my multimeter is pooched or if I need to have a look back through the stator papers.

what to do with the orange, orange/green wires on SH775 install?

Excellent, thank you guys. That is about as simple as it gets for a novice like me. Surely you can understand the fear of letting out the purple smoke, no? In any case, that gives me the confidence to go ahead and do this. I've already got everything mounted up securely, and just need to do up...

what to do with the orange, orange/green wires on SH775 install?

Ok, my confusion with this diagram arises from the red wires coming from the RR and how to plumb them into the current system. My bike has the battery positive connected directly to the starter solenoid. A red power wire goes from there to the fuse box. I'm a bit perplexed about the best way to...
