A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

1100G Engine D vs. Round Exhaust Ports

Kind of an open ended question, so I'll give you an open ended answer. Typically if you're porting for flow you'll end up with a "D" shape with a flat floor. ... not always. Laminar flow, turbulence, fluid dynamics etc etc If you look at it from the side, the top of the valve opening, the...

Milling the head for more compression?

I'm going to be "that guy" From what I have read here I am guessing no one here has ever REALLY built a performance motor. Let's start with the old maxim: There's no replacement for displacement. That went out the window 30 years ago. The replacement is RPM and compression. We can NOW build...

    Mikuni RS36 for the GS1000G

Quick generic answer: The carb jets require a drop in air pressure at the venturi. When you increase the size of the venturi, you decrease that drop in air pressure AND decrease the velocity of the air at the venturi. Same amount of air through a bigger hole will do that.... A stock GS1000...

Steel hose in oil cap, thoughts?

You are describing "gas ported pistons", found on many modern motors. Total Seal now make "ported rings" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oYQ9jOkm3_k&feature=youtu.be

Steel hose in oil cap, thoughts?

Inadequate crankcase ventilation leads to a pressurized crankcase resulting in "ring flutter", where the rings bounce in their slots, killing ring seal. Not really a problem with a stock GS with 0.125" thick rings. Modern rings are much thinner, and much more flexible, usually about 0.040"...

    Cylinder Block / Piston Assembly

It's a two man job or By myself, motor goes in a engine stand, then turn it upside down so the pistons are hanging. The cylinder block goes on the bike lift so I can use the hydraulics to inch the block up to the pistons

    GS750 to GS1000 Engine Swap

The four rear trans mounts are the same. The mid mounts are further back on the 750 The front mount is longer and has a 35mm offset to the left on the 1000. I have a good 750 motor if you need parts.

Removing a Broken Bolt in Motorcycle Cylinder Head

When you say "machine shop" a lot of folks picture what I would call an aerospace shop. Perfectly clean, big tool room with all the latest tools in every variation and CNC everything, cranking out parts to some theoretical exacting spec. A job shop is nothing like that. There is a LOT more...

    battery damaged by starter failure??

OP: Your battery is toast. You toasted it by leaving it on a charger. New battery, charge it BEFORE you install it, at no more than 10% of it's capacity. Get an automatic charger, something like a tender, plug it in once a week. Clean all the terminals, both ends.

    battery damaged by starter failure??

That's not the way it works either. The running car's alternator can put about 100 amps. The battery in that car can put out 1000 amps, all by itself without an alternator. If anything is going to take out your charging system, it's the battery. ... but what in your mind is causing this HUGE...

    Degree the cams?

Degreeing the cam is checking the cams are opening/closing when you think they are. You would degree stock cams if you were blue printing a motor. To change the "power band" you would move the "centers" or timing of the cams, by changing the clocking between the two cam and/or the crank. Off the...

Are OEM brake lines really that bad??

The age old brake line test: Wrap your hand around your brake line so you're holding it lightly in the palm of your hand. Pump up the brakes. Anything you feel is hydraulic pressure that's NOT going to the caliper. Rubber lines need to be replaced regularly, steel lines don't.

Excellent choice for vintage racing IMO

I've built numerous vintage racers from street bikes and I agree that you should start with a "beater"... if you're going to be serious about the venture. Serious as in trying to win races. If you're SERIOUSLY building a racer. all you're going to use of the original bike is the VIN, the frame...

3M sealing tape on spoked wheels

Old Gixxer wheels weigh a ton. I used SV wheels, the second time 'round. Much lighter. You can seal the spokes so it will hold air, but spoked rims were never made to run tubeless. There is a difference between a tubed and a tubeless rim... and tire. You can always run a tube in a tubeless, but...
