I waited a couple of weeks between Christmas and New Year's to cut and buff the parts, Bill. I have my handy variable speed drill with the polishing pads, wool. yellow foam, and finally black foam finish pad. It's perfect for getting around the tank seams and the front of the tank. I can hold...

Thanks for the kind words gentlemen. Glen, your expertise in photography also blows me away. I went to the photo section and checked out your pics. You, my friend, are an artist of the highest order. Such beautiful work.. In my lack of photo knowledge and skills, I've always gone for early...

It's been a long time since I've done a flake job, but I remember the sequence very well. Silver base coat, flake mixed with clear over the silver, usually 2 rounds of cleat coats to cover the flake and then orange candy, followed by more clear to protect the orange, then stripes (which I would...

You're welcome, Steve. It's a tip I've been promoting for a long time. It really does work.

Screwed the tank emblems on and took the parts outside in natural light. Sadly, a very gloomy day, not the greatest for finish pics, but oh well.. Still shows off the depth of reflections even in this light. I love the way these parts turned out. I painted the underside of the tail...

Holidays are over. Time to finish up Mal's GS750. While my wife was at work, I stole her kitchen counter to sand the clear. Started with 800 wet/dry on to 1000, 1500, and finally 2000 grit. Took a moment to put a quick spritz of the same black for the side covers to match the back ground...

You're very welcome, Mal. You've been the perfect client. I enjoy doing this kinda stuff..and if I take home a buck or two, I'm a happy guy. I'll open these parts up with some 600 grit tomorrow and let them breathe through Christmas and then start the polishing process. I also like em to...

Thanks Bill. I learned how to do that after doing it wrong several times. It pretty much ensures they go back on where they need to, because you only get one chance at it. :p Back to the spray booth today to get the second round of clear coats going. No sense re-spraying the bottom. Just a...

I'm impressed with the quality of the Diablo striping/decal kits. These fit and conformed to the curves of the tank beautifully..which was a huge relief. 3M has always been my preferred choice for tape of any kind. It's more expensive, but once you compare..there's nothing that even comes...

After sanding the tank and tail section with 600 last night, I got started on the decals. Decals make me lay awake at night. Always a bit of anxiety involved in putting them on and trying to get them correct and symmetrical on both sides. I had some pictures that Mal sent me and some examples...

Wait till you can see it in natural light. The pearl and the metallic will really show up. Florescent lights are nice to spray by, but they hide the true beauty. I'm hoping I can get to the decals in the next couple of days so they have a bit of time to gas out before the next round of clear...

I think I'll leave them the way they are then, Mal. I love the way they look, they're absolutely flawless and with the emblems, they'll really pop.

While the clear was drying I moved on to the side covers and filler cover. The backs first.. After the backs dried, I did the fronts. I really like the way these look..but I wonder if they're too satin..hmm. Do they need to be a bit shinier black..? No big deal to re-do them with...

    Back to bikes

Thanks, Pete. On to block sanding the parts and painting today. Started with 400 wet followed by 600 to smooth out the 400 scratches. A primer touch up here and there. I always hang parts if I can and always attach a "handle" to keep the part from spinning while I spray. Drives you...

I've signed a few gas tanks on the under side, Mal. Only when asked to do so, though. I'm always honored..so, sure.

    Remove Engine for Paint?

I've done it both ways. If you remove the exhaust (the carbs off would make it way easier for sure) and all the body parts around it, you can mask off the frame with aluminum foil. Just wrap everything up with it. Sand as much of the engine and clean it as much as possible, and you should be...

    Back to bikes

Thanks, Mal. I've enjoyed the process. You weren't duped. I can totally understand thinking it was powder coated. It's appearance, feel, look, texture, color were all an amazing match to the tank. I'm glad it was painted, it really does make it easier. The parts look real nice and I can't...

    Back to bikes

Polyester primer is almost a spray putty. It is indeed catalyzed and uses a bit of reducer. It's main purpose is to cover fresh body work, plastic fillers, fiberglass. It fills voids and low spots really well, and sands super easy. Epoxy is mainly used to cover and protect bare metal and can...

    Back to bikes

I went with epoxy primer for the tank. Should make a nice barrier between the powder and the base coat. I'll let it cure till next weekend and scuff it up with some 600. All in all, a good day.
