    Back to bikes

I got started sanding today. If there's one thing I took away from it..is that powder coat does NOT like to be sanded. It's like Armour. Now I see why it's so useful in industrial applications. I sanded the tank with 400 grit DA disks and got a good scuff on the tank..but knew I needed to...

I wasn't sure about the whole powder coat thing either, Pete..but as I soon learned..

I don't think I saw anything that needed to be deleted, Ed. I find your comments interesting and useful.

    Back to bikes

I can't, Bill. Never seen it done before. You'd think it would turn into a puddle or at the very least, distort the shape in the baking process, but this one looks great.

    Back to bikes

It's indeed powder coat as Mal told me from the very beginning. Gel coat, as mentioned, is strictly a fiberglass product. It should..(should)..never be used on metal parts like the tank. I'll sand most of the powder coat off both pieces to avoid buildup. The epoxy primer, usually sprayed on to...

    Back to bikes

My friend, Jason, called me back and told me to go ahead and sand the parts smooth with 400 but instead of a pre-paint, to spray the parts with a couple of coats of epoxy primer to seal off the powder coat . Let that set for a couple of days, scuff the epoxy, and then go on to base coat/clear...

    Back to bikes

That's a good question, Ed. When I first found out the parts are powder coated. I was asking myself the same thing..especially when it came to putting an ABS part in a 400 degree oven. The parts are flawless. If there had been dents in the tank, I would grind it all back to bare metal and...

    Back to bikes

Packing peanuts heaven.. How the tank arrived..wow.. Perfect for returning the parts back to Mal.. There's not a single ding in this tank. Maybe one of the nicest I've ever started with. Interestingly it and the tail have been powder coated. $650 worth of materials..not...

    Back to bikes

After doing a school bus and my car..I was glad to get the opportunity to do another bike. I got a call from allojohn, a member here who wants his GS750 painted. My pleasure. Mal could write a book on how to carefully pack parts for shipping. I'm quite confident these boxes could've been...

    Why paint a PT Cruise..?

That's funny, T ..I too've seen so many PT Cruisers with 100 pounds of stick on gee-gaws all over them. Very similar to when Honda released the 1st Goldwings and the aftermarket went crazy with chrome add-ons. Less is more has always been my approach. Thanks also, Pete, for the kind words...

    Why paint a PT Cruise..?

Wow..those Pontiacs are a big cars..I can understand why they were difficult. I've painted a lot of cars, but very few by myself. It is a ton of work, and believe me, I felt it. :p I was lucky there was very little body work, but the 14 hr. day in the spray booth just about killed me..lol...

    Why paint a PT Cruise..?

Thanks for the compliment. I always thought the later model Fiero GTs were pretty cars. The SRT Neons are sleepers, for sure. I've had several chances to drive a Turbo PT..and always passed on it. I was told, "Why not..? They really cook.." I know..and that was the reason. I knew if I...

    Why paint a PT Cruise..?

Thanks, Steve. Such a small amount of contrast goes a long way. Same with the orange on the rims I think.

    Why paint a PT Cruise..?

Thanks, Pete. I like the style, too. I traded in a perfectly good 1994 Toyota Celica for it. The sales person thought I was crazy. That Celica would run circles around my Corvette. I loved that car, and at times I wonder what I was thinking, but the PT has been a much more utilitarian car...

    From 78c to 79s clone

Looks like you got a good start on things, Chuck. The red/orange matches the decals nicely. In for a penny in for a pound..of course you have to put the "S" on the side covers. Did you decide whether to stripe the tank and fender before putting on the red? Seems it would be easier to fill in...

    Why paint a PT Cruise..?

Thanks you guys. Got it pin striped and back together late today right before it got dark. Amazing how just the bit of orange accents the 2 other colors. I'll get a couple of shots tomorrow..oh wait..the debate..maybe Wednesday..

    Why paint a PT Cruise..?

Hey Steve. You're absolutely right. I knew what I was going to do to this car months before I bought it. The look of a 37 Ford sedan was what sold me and what I wanted to emulate. First up was 2-toning it. I wanted to get right on that because I was sure everybody and their brother would...

    Why paint a PT Cruise..?

Got started on the PT paint today. 6 straight hours of masking. I forgot how much there is to do to painting a car.. I think I used, literally, 100 dollars worth of tape and masking paper doing the inside and outside...yikes. There will be nice crisp paint lines inside the doors...

    Why paint a PT Cruise..?

The HHR is a cool ride. Too bad about it's fate, Bill. They were right there during that whole neo-retro thing. Some people don't want to acknowledge these cars led to the return of the new Mustang, Challenger and Camaro. Although it's hard to tell, I got the silver all scuffed today. Tape...
