A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

stator connectors toasted - SH775 to the rescue

SH775 arrived earlier than expected, Florida to Switzerland in 2 weeks. Nice. Here it is (superficially cleaned). Bought from suncoastcyclesports. SH775 + harness + shipping = 100USD. Had some decent crimp connectors (spades and bullets) ordered that arrived in the meantime as well. The...

stator connectors toasted - SH775 to the rescue

Rijk, I did remove the headlight loop few years ago. I think I go with "bad crimps" as a suspicion. Should be better now after being redone, but I have been lurking at a SH775 for years anyway, so I'll wait for that one as a final fix. Thanks guys

stator connectors toasted - SH775 to the rescue

Hi all, recently discovered that my stator connections have melted - again. History is, until few years ago I had the stock r/r combination on my 1978 GS1000, so when that failed I replaced it with a Shindengen SH232 shunt regulator off ebay. Stator paper checks were all well at the time...

    Rebuild 1979 gs 850 petcock

I successfully rebuilt mine with a "Tourmax" kit from ebay and it's been working for three years now. Picture shows how much the old washer shrunk in 40 years, no wonder it leaked...

    correct pads for my calipers?

Thanks Dave. Is it strongly recommended to replace the master cylinder? Mine seems to be fine, and since I have a vintage plate everything should look more or less stock. Anyway, process is delayed since the pistons were pitted at the rim (which I made worse by trying to pry them out). Bottom...

    correct pads for my calipers?

Hi, since swiss legislation does not allow saltymonk's twinpot upgrade:mad:, I bought some used calipers to at least upgrade from those tiny round brake pads to pads with more surface area (1978 GS1000E). I bought these calipers, but the seller was not sure from which model (many GS' used...

    dirty speedo screen

Ok, worked well on the tacho, it shines like a diamond now. Got too impatient on the speedo, and cracked the "glass" :(. Another lesson learnt (quite a repetitive one for me). I'll add a used speedo to the list of things I look for on ebay...

    dirty speedo screen

Hi all, since I got my GS 3 years ago I am annoyed that the plastic screens of my speedo/tacho are not clean. From the inside. So someone must have opened them, and entirely failed to clean them by using a dirty cloth. Surely a minor issue, but since I need to change the bulb of the High...

    scraped good enough?

I'm chiming in with another helpful personal experience post :p Here it comes: I use this stuff on the gasket remnants, as it does not hurt the metal (after removing most of it with a scraper). Kind of synthetic fleece. Makes this look like this Thanks to that Scotch Brite stuff my...

    crappy fix?

if there's only small pieces of gasket left, I use this stuff to scrub them off. Doesn't harm the metal (kind of synthetic fleece) and worked well for me for several gaskets. When rebuilding my engine I got quite impatient with the gaskets, and I soon realized that something sharp (like a...

    GS Sightings

Saw this shiny one at a dealership in Le Noirmont, Switzerland, a few weeks ago. Looks like an 81 or 82 model to me, but I wouldn't know for sure. It was part of this cool ensemble...

    Cylinder 3 running rich

Quick check: Does your choke plunger retract all the way? Try to gently push it in with a screwdriver and see if it moves. I had unstable idle because plunger #3 stayed open a few mm and made the mix way too rich. Did not even fire most of the time...

VM carb blow back into airbox

Hi Adi, I had the same blowback issues on idle on my GS1000, until I realized the choke plunger (on carb #3) did not fully retract. https://www.thegsresources.com/_forum/showthread.php?254877-that-*-amp-!-choke-plunger&highlight= I think you have the same VM26 carbs, so try to gently push the...

    that #*&!@ choke plunger

I did follow that tutorial as well as I put the carbs together, so the little indention is down. I need to double check on the bike, but to me it seemed, the forks do not fully push the plunger down, but expect it to slide by itself, at least the last mm. I did play with the philips screw's...

    that #*&!@ choke plunger

I checked that, and the forks are all the same way. Also it seems that the forks only lift them and keep the plungers up, but they are supposed to slide in by themselves. At least on mine the forks don't push them all the way in.

    that #*&!@ choke plunger

Thanks, I'll make sure to plan that for the next maintenance. Are these assemblies still available? I did not find them on the parts fiche for the 1978 GS1000...

    that #*&!@ choke plunger

In general my bike (1978 GS1000EC) runs well, but I had moments in the past where the exhaust pipe of #3 stayed cold, but before I found out why it was back to normal again. So nothing I could really get hold of, more an idea of "something" not being right. Few days ago I used the Colortune to...

    twin horns on 1978 GS1000?

I did buy some used 1980 GS1000 horns on ebay, direct fit. I pretty much like the sound. Louder, and also more car-like. Sounds like an old VW beetle now. The old one (despite its size) sounded more like a scooter...
