A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

1978 gs550 Timing plate max out rotation

With static timing, you are moving the crankshaft very slowly. The mechanical advancer needs rpm to start functioning, so it is not in play doing static timing. Like slinging a rock on the end of a rope. If you do dynamic timing, the engine is running and the advancer will be working, usually...

1978 gs550 Timing plate max out rotation

correct ! I was not clear as to why i said that : tmore5585 said he turned the crank both ways to set timing. And that may cause the chain to jump a tooth... especially with a loose/stuck/removed tensioner.

1978 gs550 Timing plate max out rotation

That sounds like static timing (vs strobe timing with running engine). If so, the advance assembly is not the issue. Did you check the cam timing ? Sure the chain has not jumped a tooth ? You said new contact points - still have the old ones, and do they have the same issue ? If these are not...

    Shim kits for valves?

Like Ed said, So going from 270 to 255 is a big step, hope the valves are undamaged. If you have 255 or 255x in there now, and (with the cam lobes positioned correctly) you can turn the bucket with your fingers, there's play. Which should mean with 1 or max 2 sizes smaller, you should be ok.

    Pilot jets

sounds like a plan, maybe even stick the old float seats and needles back in to see if that changes things. it's a bit messy but if you place the carb rack (without the bowls mounted) on a stand above a tray and feed it gas, you can manually check each carb simply by lifting its float and see...

    Pilot jets

i'd focus on the flooding first. Only 1 cause for that : the float needles do not shut off for whatever reason. Floats not moving, float needles stuck, floats at wrong height, something like that. You have replaced the o-rings between inlet rubbers and head ?

    Pilot jets

this may be a suggestion easy to dismiss ... but have seen a number of float bowl gaskets recently that are too large on the float sides. Rubbing the floats, preventing movement. So one carb would starve, while the next carb would be stuck in float needle open position. Are you sure the floats...

GS750 engine noise at high rpm

i do not recognize the sound unfortunately. Ear to a big screwdriver can help determine where the sound comes from, like a stethoscope. If you are positive that sound started only after changing the cable, you could remove the wormwheel in the cam cover. Plug the hole with something and see if...

#2 cylinder always rich and fouled

I have seen several rebuild kits that have an o-ring on the diaphragm that's a little bit smaller than the original. And the diaphragm rod almost half a millimeter shorter than original. So the o-ring never seats nicely, and gas flow does not shut off completely. An o-ring slightly larger solved...
