A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

    losing spark

Had the same thing on one of my GS1000 bikes. Turned out to be a broken sparkplug, it would spark nicely but replacing it solved the issue. You still have points ?

1983 GS750ES Bikes goes dead when Flasher is removed

Must be a combination of factors, since that circuit only powers turn signals, horns and brake light switches. So even when wired/fused all wrong, it should not have affected the whole bike going dead. Maybe the FIAMM horns and seperate wiring/relay were hooked into the main 12V somehow, and...

That sounds like PROGRESS, did that solve all issues ? Congrats anyways, progress makes up for frustration, right ? :D

1983 GS750ES Bikes goes dead when Flasher is removed

Troubleshooting is easier with everything stock. Especially for us that can't see your setup. All nonstandard components and wiring are adding extra complexity to the troubleshooting, for us and for you. So removing or unhooking all non-standard wiring and components, like LED blinkers and...

How do YOU jump start an old GS?

Shop owner i know stores customer bikes over the winter period, paid service. Collects the bike if need be, services it etc. Had the batteries on trickle chargers all winter the first couple of years. Then switched to 100% load at first and leave them without charger for a month. Load 100%...

    Burning through stators

My Caltrics look better after years of use with a SH775 or Compufire. Not new, but just a hint of oil baked on. Changing oil every year. Yours looks like it got quite hot, so maybe your SH775 was a fake after all ? Think that's why Ed asked for specifics on it.

    GS Valve Shim Club

I usually measure my shims with a digital caliper, but if i measure using an outside micrometer i do find small differences in outside rim and the contact area with the lobes.

    83 550L spark plugs

yeah i know, have been bit by fake NGK B8ES spark plugs. Would fail several within a couple thousand miles, sometimes 100 miles. Was looking at everything on my bike and when the box of 10 (fake) B8ES plugs was done i put in some 20 year old used ones i had laying around. Problem solved, but it...

    Starting Trouble

Not necessarily, but you are right PRI is only to prime the carbs when dry and to fill the evaporated fuel in the bowls after sitting for some time. Like rphillips said BIG NO,NO to leave that for hours let alone for weeks on PRI. That's asking for problems. Start with taking off the oil...

Left turn signal fires both rear turn signals and front left signal.

the GSR hive mind has an interesting topic here ... https://www.thegsresources.com/_forum/forum/technical-forums/electrical-ignition/59842-led-flashers-what-you-need-to-know

Left turn signal fires both rear turn signals and front left signal.

IIRC it's about power from the cockpit indicator lamp. That's connected to both L/R turn signals. Not enough to light a regular turn signal lamp but enough for a LED. Fitting a diode, or disconnecting the cockpit indicator lamp should solve that. Think there's guys here that can explain this...

    Starting

Good call on the clutch lever switch. You could unhook that and bridge the connectors during testing.

Left turn signal fires both rear turn signals and front left signal.

How about original blinkers ? A decent 2nd hand set should not be expensive.

    Starting

The switch may be fine but dirty, maybe cleaning was not good enough or there's a wiring issue. If you unhook the signal wire on the relay and connect a voltmeter, testlight or beeper to the harness relay connector you should be able to get a consistent result when pressing the starter button. I...

    1979 GS750 (VM26SS) Leaking Float Bowls

i bought a bunch of gaskets back then. Carb tops, float bowls and clutch covers, 10 sets. Liked the idea they are reusable, and they will not stick like the paper types do. Just open the carbs or clutch and no need to have new ones handy because one breaks. Or worse, have to wait for days for...

Hard to start when cold; vs hard to start when warm

Like WhoDat said, valves first. With a new to me bike, valves and compression test always are the first thing i do. If you have a burned valve or clearance out of spec, worn piston rings ... the rest is secondary, maybe even pointless. And it would make hard to start make perfect sense. I'd...

    1979 GS750 (VM26SS) Leaking Float Bowls

I bought Hildebrandt rubber reusable gaskets years ago, like them a lot ! https://www.ebay.com/itm/295685460297 They are bike lovers, real friendly guys, highly recommend them. If they don't have the right gaskets you can send them one and they will reproduce it in rubber.

GS550 doesn't like prolonged high speeds - fuel starvation or something else?

Oh just remembered, my buddy recently had an issue with losing power full throttle. Would run perfect on auxiliary fuel bottle, but full throttle on several test drives would give issues after a few miles. He checked everything he could think of, he is meticulous and it could not be the carbs...
