A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Twinpot Brake upgrade on 78 Skunk

I haven't read through all 64 pages (yet!), but has anyone done any weight comparisons between a typical set of twin GS rotors and calipers and the new parts (together with the adapters, rotors, twin pot calipers etc)? I would assume there's a decent amount of weight taken off the fork, and...

anyone go for a ride today? Pics?

Congrats on the new bike Rich! I saw you had posted a few pics on FB as well.

    Cold start

You eliminated the problem but the problem remains? Adjust the valves already for chrissakes. Almost all of my carbureted 4cyl bikes will start up missing on a cylinder or two if the bike has sat long enough for fuel to evaporate from the bowls and I don't let them prime enough by setting the...

When do you expect ev bikes to become practical road bikes.

Truth be told I've never been to *any* sort of motorcycle race, to say nothing of an EV motorcycle (or car) race. But one of the most exhilarating spectating experiences I've had was going down to the Indianapolis Speedrome on the southeast side of town to watch a night of racing. Everything...

When do you expect ev bikes to become practical road bikes.

I'd love for my wife to have an *affordable* EV car as her commuter that I have to worry about even less maintenance (less than her already very easy-to-live-with Camry 4cyl). A pre-requisite is that it not be as screen-dependent as a current Tesla (various basic controls buried three menus...

FREE 03 Kawasaki Voyager XII: worth the (potential) hassle?

Yeah hopping on and riding this thing home untested 650ish miles sounds kind of crazy, but that's basically half the fun to me. It's a free bike, I don't have much on the line besides potential hassle of wrangling up a U haul to drive it home if it craps out for some reason. But relative to...

FREE 03 Kawasaki Voyager XII: worth the (potential) hassle?

The bike starts and runs (well, by the sound of a clean idle in the video) and rides! Supposedly has a slow leak from the rear tire and the front is due for replacement. Yes I do have a trailer, but there's a part of me that wants to throw caution to wind, grab a one way plane ticket down to...

FREE 03 Kawasaki Voyager XII: worth the (potential) hassle?

Thanks all for the replies especially Jedz for that thorough response. I haven't ever owned or even ridden a big tourer like this, so part of the appeal is to just check off that box of trying a different flavor of motorcycle out (much like I did with my recently departed and briefly owned...

FREE 03 Kawasaki Voyager XII: worth the (potential) hassle?

I have the opportunity to get my hands on a FREE 11k mile 03 Kawasaki Voyager XII (ZG1200) in a few months, for the cost of time/gas to retrieve it from an acquaintance of my brother's in NC. Supposedly a running riding bike that just needs some tires. Have seen videos of it starting and...

    Outer Banks Area?

I'm headed down to the OBX in a few weeks, we stay farther down, in Avon this time around, in the past I've stayed in Hatteras and also not as far, up in Salvo/Rodanthe. Sort of considering trailering a bike down just to cruise up and down NC12 in the evenings, though I suspect I won't. Also...

    Low compression

Good bit of advice. Buying a $10 set of made in Japan JIS bits in the #1/#2/#3 size has saved me many stripped screw heads and much frustration over the last few years

    Low compression

In regard to rebuilding vacuum petcocks I was successful in rebuilding the original one on my GS1100E (a K&L kit as I recall), conversely I bought a brand new OEM Yamaha vacuum petcock for $100 on Ebay for my XS1100 and the damn thing lets fuel by in the "ON" position:mad:

what did you wrench on today??

Been chasing a low-rpm/pilot circuit stumble caused by a rich condition on my '78 XS1100. Complicated by the fact that I'm running a set of '80 Special carbs (on the right), with some minor differences from the original '78 carbs (on the left). The '78 carbs that are original to the bike came...

    Low compression

Based on your description of needing to use choke, only one cylinder getting hot etc, and based on overall experience with what does/doesn't go wrong with these bikes in general, my own best guess is that you might still have some clogged/partially clogged pilot circuits. Are all of the jets...

what did you wrench on today??

More of a "what did your friend wrench on for you today" entry: bwringer kindly mounted up a fresh Shinko 009 Raven on the front wheel of my Bandit 1200, I brought some six packs (of diet Pepsi) and a new tire lube-brush as bribes/offerings. With that and some cosmetic repairs, my Bandit is...

    first time Suzuki drag racing

I've always wanted to try my hand at the drag strip on a bike. Here in Indianapolis we have he Lucas Oil raceway and they have "Wild Wednesdays" "run what you brung" sort of weeknight racing. Ironically enough the new Helmet I just bought is *NOT* Snell rated which is a requirement.

And if you ever find yourself in the area make sure to get some lunch at the Wilcox general store out in Ledyard NY off of route 34B!

anyone go for a ride today? Pics?

Trailered my XS1100E out to the NY Finger Lakes last week to visit my parents with my family, did a few nice 100ish mile rides. Still exorcising a few low-rpm demons from the carbs but the bike did great on the whole.

anyone go for a ride today? Pics?

Trailered my Bandit 1200 down to set up a base camp in Rosman NC and rode out to Suches GA with my brother, who heroically rode down 600 miles through the rain on his trusty '79 XS750F 600 miles in a single day from State College PA to join up, as well as a friend from Greenville SC rode up on...
