A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

    '79 750 Petcock - Replace or Repair?

Kinda. It's got locator pins near two of the screws so it can only be rotated in 180? increments. Also the vacuum is actually in the right direction it's the fuel output that's in a different orientation, but it's nbd for my specific application

Air Box, New Filter, and Thicc Cam Shims

Getting near the end of my build and getting rid of some OEM parts that I'm not reusing. Pics here: https://imgur.com/a/750-parts-PmPpZEe The Air Box looks pretty good externally, but the crankcase ventilation area is totally rusted through. There's a hole poked in the plate that prevents it...

    '79 750 Petcock - Replace or Repair?

Thanks for the input y'all. The issue was certainly with the vacuum diaphragm, I could hear the leak on it when I bench tested it with a syringe. The vacuum line was already replaced when I got the bike. I'm a fan of the vacuum operated petcocks even if they've got more failure points than...

    '79 750 Petcock - Replace or Repair?

I've got a petcock that only flows gas reliably on prime, and it's time for me to tackle that problem. The 10 noob mistake posts recommends buying a new one over repairing, but I can't seem to find one with the same port layout as my stock. The cheapo "universal" ones all have the ports coming...

1978 gs550 Timing plate max out rotation

Woah yeah looks like CMSNL has some but they're $100+ for the set!!! Definitely worth the switch to EI. Good call double checking TDC. I 3d printed a screw myself so that it's soft and wouldn't mar the aluminum piston last time I timed cams. FYI don't try to tune the carbs until after you get...

    Brake Caliper Piston Wear

My best guess is the PO had a backrest for their passenger and that's like a comfortable/reclining footrest for them?

    Brake Caliper Piston Wear

Just got the parts in and reassembled everything. I grabbed K&L kits for the calipers and master cylinder and generic hose/fittings from Z1 for the line. I wedged a piece of wood between the frame and the pedal overnight to check everything at it all looks good with no leaks. I even got it to...

1978 gs550 Timing plate max out rotation

Alright got the points and condensers in yesterday. Got her fired up and running so that certainly was my issue. The Daichii points I got were NOS and had a coating on them that prevented them from having a good connection at first. Not sure if this was a factory coating or corrosion from...

    Brake Rotor Compatibility

i hadn't thought of surface finish changing with diameter! That makes a lot of sense. I guess cast iron is easy enough to machine that it doesn't make a huge difference with That video makes it sound like there's not much downward pressure at all so maybe you could get away with some scrap...

Yep I have the ND ignition so I got daichii made ND style points and condensers. I think daichii looks like a pretty trusted Japanese brand so I'm hoping for good quality. I hadn't noticed in your original post you said you got aftermarket contacts. In that urban monk video he had issues with...

    Brake Rotor Compatibility

Yeah I read some posts here about that and watched some YouTube videos. Looks like it'd take some pretty specialized equipment to do this one right and you'd have to punch the rivets and redo them. I did see a guy who had a radial table set up on a mill with a sanding pad attached that seemed...

Ground Loops, Mystery Fuse, and Bad Crimpers

Got some electrical questions for yall now. I've been reading and trying to follow the Ground Loops and High Performance Power discussions with my limited electrical knowledge. What I gathered from them is that I should be using a single point ground to minimize the likelihood of electricity...

1978 gs550 Timing plate max out rotation

Yeah I've occasionally had pickups die on chainsaws as well. It is kinda nice to just be able to do a straight up replacement and not have to fiddle much with timing, but it's definitely a bit more expensive than just swapping points. Kinda seems like the idea of carbs vs fuel injection where...

tmore - Yep I only meant that they 'run directly on the crankshaft' as in the governor + lobe are directly on the crank - not timed via the cam chain. My online descriptions of things are greatly hampered by lack of proper terminology and inability to point at things when I talk. I'm quite...

    Brake Rotor Compatibility

Upon doing some more research it seems like I might be able to use this one I've ordered. It's sitting at .247" (with the 6mm minimum being .236"). I'm used to car rotors where you gotta get them turned when you replace brake pads, so I thought .011" wasn't gonna be enough for that, but some...

    Brake Rotor Compatibility

Anyone have any info on rotor fitment? I have a '79 GS750 that needs a new rear rotor. The few from early 750s on eBay I've found have been very close to the spec limit - I'm wondering if I can widen my search to later years/different models. Or could I drill out the rivets and get a new disk...
