    Dented 1000s tank restore

What's your plans for the tank, Chuck..? Repair for re-sale, or use it on one of your own bikes..?

    My 82 1100E

Yeah, that's what I meant with my previous post. Blacks can indeed contrast with different textures and level of gloss. My bike has gloss engine covers and valve cover, semi-gloss head, flat black cylinders, and a flat black Yosh pipe. It gives it dimension and a level of detail I really like. I...

    The Good Humor GS850G

Fun thread. Lots of great pictures. On your question on whether to paint the engine silver or black, I would keep the engine stock looking. Polished covers and silver painted motor. It would match the silver in your paint job nicely. Looking forward to the rest of your build.

    Fuel tank repair (1983 GS850G)

You might consider stripping off all the paint to reveal what damage needs to be repaired and then take it to a reputable radiator repair shop. They deal with leaks all the time, and, they can strip the inside by boiling it out, and then coat the inside plus pressure check it once it's done.

    My 82 1100E

I, too, love black wheels on these old Suzukis. It was one of the first things I decided on when I did my own Cooley. It looks great on that bike. They contrast so nice with the other black pieces.

    My Norton is taking shape

Funny you should mention the flimsy-ness of the Duro tires. I thought that, too, when I got them. They were the easiest tires I've ever mounted. They did indeed feel more like mountain bike tires. 2.50-18 for the front 2.75-17 for the rear. Once inflated they felt fine. The Honda CL100 is...

    My Norton is taking shape

Are those Duro brand tires? They look just like a set I mounted on my '72 Honda CL100. The bike is coming right along. A ton of work, for sure.

    Things I Made

PDR has always been a magical skill. It does indeed need many years of practice, patience and skill. My wife's car had a small 3" long crease just under the passenger door mirror, and a small door ding in the middle of her driver's door. It was only a week after we got the car..argh. I turned it...

    From 78c to 79s clone

I've painted the inside of all 8 S models and every fairing I've done in the past. A satin black finish looks so much better then the factory over spray. Masking the rolled edge around the fairing gives it a nice finished look. Suzuki didn't have time to do it on the assembly line, but if...

    Got a 3 wheeler today

I bet hanging out in the lounge chair will last for...2 days before you're back out in the shop wondering what you can do from a sitting position. Got any small parts that need polishing..? :p Get well, Chuck.

    Look what I found!

Nice find. I wonder if he (or anyone here) has the rubber molding that surrounds to top of an S fairing. I've needed one of those for years..never had one in fact. :(

    From 78c to 79s clone

Chuck, sometimes you just gotta say, screw it. I'm gonna work on my own stuff for a day or two. That's the way it was when I was painting bikes for a living. I could work 12 hour days 7 days a week and still feel like I was neglecting my clients. Take some time for yourself, and remember why...

1978 GS750e Yoshimura Racking Exhaust - blocks oil drain plug - ideas?

Finding an actual period correct Yosh pipe for my GS1000S took me in the direction I went with it. I was bummed about having to remove the center stand and to have to pull it off to change the oil and filter, but I got used to it. I also put exhaust studs in the head to replace having to use...

    Engine painting

You can also use aluminum foil to mask off all the areas around the engine to paint it still in the frame. Very little masking tape and paper required with that method. Just pinch the foil around frame tubes, carbs, and anything else around the engine. Easy. :encouragement:

Time to repaint a nearly perfect tank :)

Thanks for the pics. On the places where you broke through the clear and black base coat, you'd be smart to spray a couple of thin, dry coats of primer over them, otherwise there's a chance the new base coat will eat into them. It won't take much to cover them, but it's the safe thing to do.

Time to repaint a nearly perfect tank :)

If your stripes are in good shape, no reason to re-do them (unless they're over dents). Pictures of your tank would help, for sure. If you can buy some 3M Fine Line 1/8-1/4" plastic making tape at an auto paint store, you can mask off the stripes and then sand right up to the tape. I...

    '83 Kat porn

Just watched your whole video. It turned out beautiful. Nice to have friends pitching in, a well equipped and clean shop and the desire to bring that bike to the standard you did. Congratulations on a really nice restoration. You should be very proud. Now, get out and ride the wheels off of it. ;)

The Fear of Failure (First time restoration woes)

Not all cafe' bikes are trashed out, cut up, and dangerous to ride. Some are..for sure..but I've seen just as many well-built cafe' bikes that are gorgeous. I have 2 vintage cafe' bikes and both have been show winners and have had magazine features on them. Best of luck on your build, we'll...
