A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

I thought you'd appreciate the update. As for finding a buyer, I posted it on CL and 2 prospective buyers responded. One recently sold his 750E and liked it so much that he wanted a larger GS. The other prospect, the guy that bought it was looking for a classic UJM for a buddy but liked it too...

THAT's the tip I was hoping for. I still have a pack of the necessary washers from the last time I did this minor mod. THANKS Mr Iceman!

    '82 GS1100G Tensioner question

To answer your questions.....my guess is that it had been taken apart at some time and reassembled without preloading the spring at all. So, that said, I guess it needed some turns instead of none. Bottom line is that it maintains pressure on the tensioner plunger. Fwiw, I turned the crank...

    '82 GS1100G Tensioner question

To anyone following this thread, I thought I'd write the final chapter, I hope. After adding 2 more turns to the spring preload, the tensioner works great now. No more slack when turning the crank by hand. The End PS Thanks to those who helped and happy new year to all.

    '82 GS1100G Tensioner question

Understood and what I what I should have written. I realize that the plunger itself doesn't make contact with the chain and I appreciate you taking me to task on this matter in case anyone else may've taken my words literally. Thanks Rich.

    '82 GS1100G Tensioner question

Thought I'd update this for anyone who's following my ordeal. The old saying that you can't see the forest because of the trees, or something to that effect comes to mind. After realizing that I could push the plunger rod in all the way without turning the knob, I turned my attention to that...

    '82 GS1100G Tensioner question

I had the exact same idea with regard to observing the operation of the tensioner with it off and in my hand. I'm guessing that's the only way to determine if the spring loaded rod with the knob on the end is exerting enough force to keep the plunger from retracting into the housing. Stay tuned...

    '82 GS1100G Tensioner question

A couple more observations that are causing me mixed feelings. 1st some regret that I messed with the tensioner at all. 2nd the understanding that one never knows the mechanical history of a used bike that has a performance problem. and 3rd I'm confident that I have a good chance of fixing any...

    '82 GS1100G Tensioner question

Okay, I'm feeling pretty good about there being exactly 20 pins between the arrows. Just want to make sure that the T 1-4 mark you mentioned is the mark that's located between the T and the F. This is the mark I'm referring to and, perhaps its not important if it isn't because there are 20 pins...

    '82 GS1100G Tensioner question

I'm a little confused about your instructions so let me respond and comment, in bold, to the parts that are the source of that confusion. Keep in mind that I'm not inferring or stressing anything by using the bold letters. Thanks. I'm guessing that you're referring to counting the chain pics...

    '82 GS1100G Tensioner question

Thanks again guys, really. Funny, in a way, but I woke up around 3AM this morning, worried about how I may've screwed things up. Your latest responses offer a great deal of relief. However, a couple of details came to mind that I forgot to include in my last reponse, really. Here they are. I...

    '82 GS1100G Tensioner question

I appreciate the additional responses. I will admit that I didn't disassemble the tensioner. I removed it to see why the knob wouldn't move in either direction. My theory was that it was being held in place because the threaded shaft with the locknut was never loosened after it was installed the...

    '82 GS1100G Tensioner question

Thanks guys. I removed the tensioner today and, as I did, the knob turned. I checked the movement once I had it off and in my hand and it appears to work smoothly. No idea what the problem may've been but thankful all is well. Thanks again and happy holidays!

    '82 GS1100G Tensioner question

I presently have the carbs and manifolds off my 1100 to rebuild the carbs and replace the manifolds and o-rings. While I have access, I thought I'd turn the knob on the tensioner. I was surprised that it won't budge in the least, even with quite a bit of force. Correct me if I'm mistaken, as...

    '83 GS1100G needle shimming question

It's been years since I last messed with GS carbs where everything is stock. I seem to remember a tip that involved shimming the slide needle by adding an additional washer under the existing one OR did the tip involve removing the nylon spacer and(?) replacing it with a thin washer? Can...
