More modern cartridge fork options - retaining GS wheels & proper/revised geometry

Good advice John... I just wanted to add that I've been running Continental Road Attack 3 tires on my big bore GS750 for a couple seasons now, and I'd be reluctant to switch back to anything else... They resolved the same issue for me, lowering the front end and raising the rear end to get...

Thank you Gs Resources! GS674 LIVES!

Your bike project looks beautiful, very nicely detailed Did you ever get the Marving 4-1 installed? I love the flat collector 4-into-1 pipes they make. Delkevic also now make a stainless steel 4-into-1 pipe for the 8V GS550's now, very nice products, I have 3 of them for 750 & 1000's.

Which 65mm pistons for a big bore?

A GS750 engine would be a poor choice if a GS650 top end was available, the 650 head and piston design is vastly superior, and the 750/1000/1100 engines are substantially heavier and substantiallly wider, detracting drastically from cornering ability. A GSXR750 engine on the other...

Details before pulling the trigger on 550/673 swap

Also, I've honed scoring & rust spots out of cylinders that looked trashed but had very little bore wear otherwise, and even after extensive honing to get rid of the scoring, they still measured WELL WITHIN SPECS with a dial bore guage throughout the cylinder... Just need to make sure you file...

Details before pulling the trigger on 550/673 swap

On the used cylinders, 40,000 can still look like new, but I've seen 30,000 mile cylinders severely worn from overheating or running low quality air filters or even running K&N's in dusty conditions (the goofy looking Uni pods will filter far better,by the way, protecting your engine...

Details before pulling the trigger on 550/673 swap

On your 550 pipes, you'll need to fabricate some shim stock to wrap as a centering bushing in the 650 head, as it's larger i.d. that the 550 head in the exhaust area. I've got a MAC 650 exhaust for when I build the 550/650 for myself, but the other one is shimmed with 550 pipes. On the 550 vs...

Details before pulling the trigger on 550/673 swap

High reving cams are definitely fun, but when I switched to 850/1000 cams (more midrange) on my big bore 750, I was quite pleased at the extra midrange grunt... Revving to the moon riding like a maniac everywhere definitely is fun but definitely draws attention from everyone within a mile...

Details before pulling the trigger on 550/673 swap

I don't remember hearing about using the 650 ignition advancer mechanism if using 650 cams, that's news to me! I thought they were all the same (Either ND or KD of same specs).

Details before pulling the trigger on 550/673 swap

I clearanced my wife's 550 case when they were split and empty, but on one set of 750 cases I'd done pretty early on in my mechanical endeavors, I cleaned all oil residue off the areas around each cylinder/crank journal, & used blue masking tape to seal off the crank bearing & crankcase areas, &...

More modern cartridge fork options - retaining GS wheels & proper/revised geometry

Also I should mention that in order to run these GSXR1100K forks properly, especially when stepping down in wheel diameter to a 100/90-18 which lowers front ride height which also slows you down in corners as it detracts from your lean angle before scraping the stator, I plan to make an inverted...

More modern cartridge fork options - retaining GS wheels & proper/revised geometry

John Kat Revisiting this thread again, I think I might have solved two problems simultaneously! Do you still have that VStrom DL1000 steering stem? I was wondering if you could measure the press area of the bottom, from the step transitioning from the bearing seat area into the triple clamp...

    Gearbox issues - shift forks?

Yes I forgot to mention the Barnett clutches although I might have mentioned them previously. As Brian mentioned, they are all thinner in order to fit one additional friction disc and steel plate in the same height. Barnett clutches are easily identified if I am recalling correctly, from the...

    Gearbox issues - shift forks?

And yes, the basket gets grooved from the fingers on the friction discs hammering into the aluminum clutch basket slots. You can very carefully and precisely file them to the bottoms of the notches and get proper operation back, but then they have a little bit more free play back and forth and...

    Gearbox issues - shift forks?

Yes I'm definitely going out of my way to buy OEM Suzuki and Kawasaki friction discs for my bikes, might as well get the OEM steels also. I've been running at Shell Rotella T4 and regular Rotella tea before that, for as long as I've had motorcycles, and I've never had the hot clutch swell issues...

    Gearbox issues - shift forks?

Definitely the first step is to inspect the clutch steel plates for warpage (& wear on the friction material), then check the clutch basket for notching. Barnett racing clutches are thinner steel (in order to allow room for one extra plate+disc) & are notorious for notching the clutch basket...

    Gearbox issues - shift forks?

2022 riding season update - turns out my suspected shift fork / gearbox issue was entirely caused by excessive hot swelling of the clutch friction materials... I dusted the bike off and pulled it out to prep for a 10 day road trip that I usually open my riding seasons with (May birthday road...

    Shinko 230 Torture Test

The Shinko 230 and 712 are undoubtedly the best tires for the money that I have ever ran on these bikes, and I really really push them to the limits. They grip far better than Avon Road Riders and Bridgestone Battlax BT45/BT46 tires. The Pirelli Sport Demon might be the only comparable gripping...

    Shinko 230 Torture Test

They don't last very long on a heavier bike or an aggressive rider, but they sure do grip! Shinko has the best rubber compounds at least for being on a budget! It helps if you can change and balance your own tires due to the price paid for best grip equates to more frequent tire changes. I'm...

AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days Festival 2018! July 6th 7th 8th!

So who is going this year?!? Norm? Jedz? You better bet this guy will be! I might have either a Suzuki GS400 hot rod big bore track bike built by then, or maybe a vintage Suzuki PE250 Enduro that I've had for years, one of two models of PE that I have for resto-mods! I doubt I'll have time...

    GS1000 valve seats

Thank you sir, I think I'll have Rapid Ray fit some of those to a GS425 cylinder head that I've been talking about sending him for a year and a half now. It has 750 / 850 valves in it stock. Big Jay @ APE Race Parts has fit that size of valve into 400 and 425 heads previously with excellent...
