DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

    Gs650g jumping out of 2nd

Is the bike going into neutral or third when it happens? If it's going into neutral the forks may not be engaging it all the way due to damage or wear. Do you have a manual to work from?

    Gs650g jumping out of 2nd

Sounds like a shifting fork is worn or bent. You need to split the cases to find out for sure. Others have found shift forks to be the cause and you can find a set on eBay or the parts forum on this site.

    1980 GS 1000G - Low compression

Not as common but possible is a timing chain out of time. Probably not in your case but one tooth off will cause this

Kickstand caused collar bone injury, and my recovery

Sorry to hear you crashed. I've driven off with the stand down but it's not thrown me. I've had a few close calls so I fanatically look down before taking off. Hope you recover fully

    Cam Chain Tensioner Question

Replace the seal on the right side and o ring on the left. They leak all the time and are cheap.

    ignition wires

It's easy. Pull them out and replace with solid core wires. I use accel 8mm yellows. Clean out the holes and make sure the pin in the hole is not damaged. Make sure you lightly coat the insulated end with a little glue like permatex 97 to seal them. I mark the wire to be sure it goes in deepnenough

How long does the stock r/r typically last ?

The stator runs in hot oil. Eventually after 30 years that will damage the coating o. The wires. The diodes used in the OEM RR are the weak point and they fail. I've never bought the shunt vs series regulator idea because plenty of machines use the same design and don't have these problems...

    New Alternative R/R?

"It is probably a shunt R/R which will burn up a stator" Millions of engines all over the globe use shunt regulators. I guess they all burn up the stator too.

    GS1000G 1980 BS34 CV Carbs - Lean Running?

I have a stock 1000g and a V&H 12500 model pipe. I have 42.5 pilots and actually went a little lean on mine to 114 mains. That's what a lot of testing revealed to give best plug color at speed and overall perfect driveability. I have a tiny flat spot right at 2800 but it's not worth tuning over...

    A mystery! '81 gs550mx oil loss

Check the drain hole for the starter. It's a small hole that allows water or oil to escape from the starter compartment. I had a bad seal inside my starter that pumped a lot of oil out. I put some cotton in the hole and drove 5 miles. It was soaked. It didn't leave any evidence on the engine...

    1980 GS1000 idle issue

On the plate where the pickup coils are mounted there are timing marks. An F and a T. T is top dead center and F is where it fires. The timing marks should like up when a timing light is hooked to 1 or 4 . If the timing at idle doesn't go back to F at idle the engine will run fast. The...

Clear coat on wheels and engine cases?

The key is to go in one direction. You can use steel wool but I don't recommend it because it can cause corrosion. I did my forks this way and got the satin look by going in one direction across the forks. I redo mine every few years , I usually get about 5 years on the parts.

Clear coat on wheels and engine cases?

I used 220 grit to get a similar finish then degreased with denatured alcohol. I cleared with clear engine paint, 2 coats. It lasts a few years.
