I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

Can I really not use this Tennessee gasket?

This is the gasket I have. It fits multiple GS bikes. I’m sure some of these didn’t have a tach drive in the valve cover. it should work for those bikes. https://realgaskets.com/product/valve-cover-gasket-gs-750-and-gs-1100-2/ I will hang on to the gasket for a while. If anyone wants to try...

Can I really not use this Tennessee gasket?

So does anyone want a Tennessee gasket? I’ll send it to you for free. Seems a shame to throw it away. Email me if you want it.

Can I really not use this Tennessee gasket?

Your local dealer has the gaskets?! Does your local dealer live in a time warp? :) I dunno what all this talk is about spark plugs. But I’ll just order a paper gasket online and get rid of the Tennessee gasket. Thanks guys.

Can I really not use this Tennessee gasket?

I ordered one of the silicone valve cover gaskets from Real Gaskets Tennessee for my ‘81 GS750EX. When I ordered it I saw a note on their webpage that said not to use the gasket if you have a tach drive in your valve cover. I thought to myself “well, my tach drive is on the front wheel” and...

I Need Some Vintage Motorcycle Days Advice

Thanks! That's really helpful. It sounds like the parking areas accomodate trailers, whether you're parking and staying there to camp or just coming in for the day. What about hotels nearby? Do you know any hotels that allow trailer parking? In my experience most hotels don't like trailers in...

I Need Some Vintage Motorcycle Days Advice

I'm hoping to go to Vintage Motorcycle Days in Ohio this summer. I've been there twice before but it's been close to 10 years since the last time I went. Both times I went previously I lived close by and rode my bike. Now I live pretty far away in North Carolina. So when I go next summer I want...

    72 r5 part 2

Sweet! I've been working on a R5 cafe bike for a while. I need to find an exhaust system. If you have any leads on stock pipes or some gently used expansion chambers please let me know. The stock exhaust on E-bay is all junk and the brand new expansion chambers are bonkers expensive!

    are the motors painted?

I am sure that coatings of any kind, chrome, powder coat, etc. will probably trap more heat than no coating. But I’ve chromed and powder coated a lot of cylinders and case covers on several motorcycles with no problem. I also have a 2019 Harley that is totally powder coated and chromed from the...

    Split the cases or no??

Thanks to all of you guys for your helpful suggestions. The collective wisdom of groups like this is invaluable. I can’t remember how I ever fixed anything before the Internet existed. :)

    are the motors painted?

I don’t know about the engine cases but I think the case covers have a sealant on them. You can tell when that sealant is there because when it gets old it starts to look kind of like yellowish or whiteish shellac that wants to peel off. A sisal wheel with black rubbing compound will take that...

    4th gear whine 1981 gs1100e

One thing to check is whether you have a sprocket cover with sound deadening foam in it. I think the original poster’s bike is supposed to have a cover like that. You will definitely hear a whine if you don’t have that foam.

    Split the cases or no??

I finally got the seal installed! It took some creative modifications. In short, I tapered the edge, buzzed off some of the rubber (but not all) from the outside perimeter of the seal, smeared it with Three Bond 1184, and tapped it into place with a punch and hammer. Here’s a video explaining...

Help! Oil Pan Continues to Leak, Need some advise on next steps

My favorite sealant for applications like this is a product called Hylomar Blue. It's a non-hardening sealant that gets tacky and can be wiped off with a cloth and some Brake Kleen even after it's dried. I put Hylomar blue on both the cover and the engine side very sparingly, brushing it into a...

    Split the cases or no??

Another thought along the same lines…the seal is made of metal and coated in rubber. If the rubber coating is too thick to slide into the cavity then why not cut the rubber off of the perimeter of the seal and use Three Bond 1184 instead of Flex Paste? Afterall, the engine cases are two metal...

    Split the cases or no??

Now that’s an interesting suggestion. I actually know the seal will fit in the hole without the rubber on the outside. I know this because the first seal I tried, I tapped it in with my PVC pipe and hammer and it went right into the hole and peeled the rubber right off. I had thought about...

    Split the cases or no??

Well, gentlemen I am giving up. I tapered the seal, loosened the engine case bolts, froze the seal, and tried two different very slippery lubes (red o-ring grease and vegetable based tire lube that came with my No-Mar tire changer). There is no way this seal is going into that hole without...

    Split the cases or no??

Thank you. I had thought about a taper. But I was thinking of filing the taper on the engine case, not the seal itself. But maybe your suggestion is better. Tapering the edge of the seal would be tricky though because it has that rubber cover on it. I'm not sure if you'd have to peel the rubber...

    Split the cases or no??

Installing the seal is proving difficult. This is clearly the part that splitting the cases would help with but I’m not ready to go there yet. The seal is hard and covered in a thin layer of rubber. The cavity the seal goes into is so small that when I start to gently tap the seal into place...

    Split the cases or no??

Hey ya'll, I got that C-ring out and I made a YouTube video about it. It turns out that splitting the cases would not help in any way to get that C-ring out. I fumbled with the camera a lot in this video but hopefully you'll get the point. To make a long story short, all you need to do is drill...

    Split the cases or no??

Thank you! I need to study the engine diagrams again. I didn’t realize this was possible with this engine.
