A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

Powder coat or spray paint frame

I won't use powdercoat now. I've seen too many frames where water has got under the powdercoat and rusted the base steel. Powdercoat is strong therefore when it cracks it lifts off slightly but stays apparently intact. This allows water to penetrate and spread the damage. A good 2 pack epoxy...

    17 Tooth 530 Front Sprocket

Noticeably faster chain wear too with the 17. Why 530 ? 520 is the current top performing chain and would be fine for the 750.

Any suggestions for freeing stuck pistons in cylinder

ATF and acetone 50/50 plus soak time and patience. Recently freed off a rusted solid 2 stroke with this mix. And i'd lift the front of the GS so the cylinders are vertical. Better soaking all round the pistons.

    gs550 piston ring recommendations

Given correct bore finish and mineral base oil used as a break-in, Cruzinimage rings are as good as anyone elses.

    Camshaft Regrind

I remember Rapid Ray covering this some time back. Possibly a search may turn it up. Alternatively - how bad are they ? Pretty well all cam grinders use a Eutectic overlay which work hardens once in place. I've had pitted and scored cams repaired by this method with no probs. The cam followers...

    Correct float height for vm22ss

Just to confuse things a little more. there's a video of a "Suzuki gs1000EZ" on utube apparently from Germany. And it's very obviously an 8 valve motor with probably VM22's fitted. And no, I've never heard of a GS1000EZ either. Doesn't mean it didn't exist though as Suzuki were known to produce...

    81 750 ignition fitted into 78 550

First, you'd hope the locating pin is in the same angular position on the two cranks. Second, the 550 ignition curve goes 15/1500 to 40/2400rpm, Where the 750 is 15/1500 to 35/2400rpm So you'd advance the backplate 5 deg - and hope the extra advance at idle wouldn't kill your starter. I'd make...

Let's talk about cam walk, baby...

i didn't know they'd released a kit either. My impression FWIW is that the problem is more prevalent in bikes which have a history of being warmed up on the sidestand. At one point when i was in a shop servicing them, I asked about how they warmed the bike up. So some research - but not...

Did i waste my money??? Oil cooler adapter HELP!!

I always set a manual tensioner with the cam cover off. Timing correctly set. Socket and bar on the end of the crank. Wind the adjuster in until there's no lost motion between the crank and cams when you rock the crank back and forward - only a few degrees movement is needed. Check you can lift...

Did i waste my money??? Oil cooler adapter HELP!!

You've been caught by the fact that there's more room in that area on the bigger capacity motors. Can you relieve the bottom barrel fin - or two - to turn the adapter round ? And yes, for space reasons you probably will have to fit a manual tensioner. Again, not usually a problem on bigger engines.

    Engine ID

I suspect it's possible to custom make bushes to solve the problem. Either solid aluminium or urethane. I've made custom bushes from urethane for GSXR engines when in other frames and it works well. Got a friend with a lathe ?

    Bent Camshaft or Uneven Wear?

Interesting - and something I've not seen before. First question I have is - are they stock cams ? If they're hot regrinds it's possible the lift ramps are extended to the point where they should only be measured "straight up". Next question - and probably more likely - clearance in the cam...

GS1100L 4 valve rebuild vendors and thoughts on my investigation

The crank is located sideways by one ball bearing which is at one end. Memory says ignition side but I could be wrong. Last one I replaced was bought over the counter from a local bearing supplier. It's an engine out and split job to replace it.

    GS450 Catastrophic failure

With the sump off from memory you can see the shift drum. Levering it side to side will give you an idea of how much endfloat it has.

    GS450 Catastrophic failure

Engine out, upside down, drop the sump, you'll see most of the transmission. Again, check the endfloat on the shift drum.

1982 gs450 valve guide replacements --- machinist, cylinder head suggestions

As Nessism says, find another head. It is easy to crack the area around the guide holes putting them in cold. Far easier to find another head than go to the trouble of machining and making new guides. If it was an uncommon or rare model it'd be a different story.

    Engine bolts

Look at the quantities. Cover uses 6 long ones and 10 shorter. Look at the cover itself to pick which goes where. Pretty simple stuff.

Engine tick/tapping noise only taking off in gear

It seems to be a low frequency tick which I think happens as the bike moves in gear ? Is this correct ? If it is, I'd look at the output shaft bearing next to the final drive sprocket. It may be on the point of collapse. Pull the chain and sprocket and spin the shaft by hand. Any noise or if...

    GS450 to 500 swap questions

It could be done. Two possibilities. A takeoff from the oil pressure sender cover behind the cylinders. I suspect a takeoff made for a GS1000 would work here. And an oil filter cavity cover from a late GS1150 with the cooler takeoffs would probably work too. I think the bolt pattern is the same...

81 gs1100e - track day tuning -mid throttle

For track use time the cams at 106 inlet 108 exhaust lobe centers. This gives enormous midrange. In the past i've improved mid range response from the carbs by enlarging the vacuum holes in the bottom of the slides. Often with an aftermarket pipe the vacuum signal to the carbs changes and you...
