A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

    81 gs650 2nd gear issue

Then have a good look at the dogs on the gear ends. If there's rounding on the edges that'll let them ride out of engagement. The dogs can be built up and recut. Also check the endfloat on the selector drum. Too much can again let the dogs come out of engagement.

What sound does an early failing crankshaft bearing maike/

Check the valve clearances. OHC engines like the GS and old jaguars have a nasty habit of seizing a valve or two while sitting for long periods. When they get turned over, a valve can get bent. It'll still open and close but the clearances will have become much bigger. Typically, the noise does...

    Strange Issue on a 1982 GS850G Rebuild

Are the plug leads on the correct cylinders ? the pairings are 1 - 4 and 2 - 3. If you have only one of a pair on the right plug, you'll get the symptoms you have now.

    Cu head gasket

That's fine. After 40 plus years of doing this stuff, I'm ready to put my feet up - and Rocinante is already out to pasture.

    Cu head gasket

Never seen a cutaway like that before. It's not as received from the factory anyway. Bwringer explained it clearly. Oil comes up the four corner stud holes to lube the head. O rings around the stud holes are required to seal the area. I(n an ideal world, the copper gasket would do it - but the...

    750 cams in a 1000?

And it's not correct now anyway. Better camchain, cams and springs have made the standard tensioner blade work. They put in the center sprocket to get more chain wraparound on the cams. The springs they used made this neccessary. There are roadrace GS1000's here running more lift than Yosh did...

what did you wrench on today??

Made some progress on the GS1000 racebike today. It was dropped off to me a couple of months ago - when i was undergoing radiation therapy - as a distraction. It's not been used for around 5 years now. The owner/rider got sick then surrounded himself with kids...as you do. So it needed...

Rear wheel off center, swing arm off center

What part of the frame are you using as a reference for the centerline ? Pull the seat and tank off and use the main top tube as the centerline. A long straightedge along that tube - used with a couple of others on the sides of the tyre - will tell you if the wheel is on center.

Welded crankshaft..to be or not to be, that is the question.

If it's welded as you assemble each part - tacked, checked for alignment then finish welded - you should avoid distortion. An engineer local to me did an 1150 crank for a local drag racer. He'd never done one this long before and rang me for advice - his usual fallback, lol. He did as suggested...

    Circlip plier recommendations

A cheap long nose plier, with the tips ground to suit the circlip holes. They're stiffer than the orthodox circlip plier legs - and close completely.

    GS1000s Clutch Help

Clean it up and reuse. Even the steels will clean up on a wire wheel. That center's hardly worn.

GS1100e new engine noise has me rattled

Two or three heat/cooling cycles and maybe a rattle gun on the puller center bolt should do it. I had one like that way back, the puller was on it for 3 days before i heard it pop.

    Cu head gasket

Use O rings - but make sure they're thicker than the gasket. 1.5mm copper, I'd use 2.0mm O rings - ensuring they fit reasonably snugly in the holes. And lightly countersink the holes you bore for studs etc.

Mikuni VM26 Pilot Air Screw Access - to drill, or not to drill...

Higher numbers on the slides mean higher cutaways. Higher cutaways mean more air at part throttle which equals leaner. And vice versa. Generally, if it's a lean cutaway, there'll be a richer pilot jet and often a richer needle too. There's more than one way to get good throttle response.

    Clutch basket welding - 1980 GS550E

I've done it with the backplate and springs still in place. Stick, you'd risk welding the spring end in as well.

    Clutch basket welding - 1980 GS550E

Not really enough to get hold of - and the backplate appears to be high tensile steel sheet. What i've done a couple of times on road motors is insert a 2mm steel shim against the spring end - and TIG it to the backplate. Do all the springs like this and it's good to go for some years.

    Clutch not disengaging

You say you ended up replacing the inner sleeve. Do you mean the large spacer which the needle roller bearing runs on ? If yes, you may have a short spacer. The length of this when trapped between the washers is just enough to let the basket spin on the bearing. Too short and it will lock...

new head gasket on GS550 results in oil dripping from front 10mm screw

Just the block should suffice. But if you've used an MLS head gasket, I wouldn't re-use it as you will almost certainly have stretched/indented areas of it already - and it may not seal again.

new head gasket on GS550 results in oil dripping from front 10mm screw

Correct. It's the only way of ensuring everything is level. Take it to a machine shop and ask for a very light levelling cut on the top surface. They'll probably only take about .005in off which won't change cam timing enough to bother with. I'd pick that at least one of the inner cylinder...

new head gasket on GS550 results in oil dripping from front 10mm screw

And again - you changed the sleeves ? If this has been done it's imperative to have the top surface of the block skimmed flat. Even if you think it is already flat.
