A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

    Didn't really need another project...

Score! Well, I thought it was a good deal. Original exhaust. CA model even.

    Didn't really need another project...

That is entirely true. Although I was speaking mostly to whether the frame & engine #s check out. And there will come a point when I'll slap any exhaust on it, if only to get it on the road. But, an original CR exhaust would be preferable. And, it turns out the system I saw on the 'Bay didn't...

It should be a fun project. Although, I will say, the Harley service manual leaves much to be desired.

Yes. This I knew. Awfully silly rule if you need to have the CHP verify the VIN. Lord knows the CHP is unlikely to come to you to do verification.

Is there any reason to insure it now? I'm planning on putting it in Non-Op until I get it road worthy again.

I just missed a complete exhaust on the bay. Sold for $300. Kicking myself over that one. Trying to resist messing with the bike just yet. Promised the wife I'd finish a couple other bikes first.

There were some photos. But I guess photobucket is jerking me around. Haven't mastered the forum photo attachment feature too well, and it keeps rotating the pictures I try to upload. But, yes, that's it. Although in much rougher shape.

I was told it was never PNOed. My friend is looking for the BOS he got from the owner when he bought it. I think going through one of the registration services might be the easiest option for me. Yeah, it costs money, but if I can get this titled in my name, its worth, it I think.

What are your thoughts on the DMV hassles? No title. No tags. Have Bill of Sale, not that means anything to CA. Think DMV will assess 30 years of back fees? Apparently the original owner is long dead.

The engine & frame have matching #s. The guy I got it from has had it sitting in his garage for 30 yrs. I know two people who know, or knew, the original owner. I'm not overly concerned if it just turns out to be a modified Sportster. It looks right. Biggest pain is that it hasn't been...

From what I've been able to dig up, around 1900 were built in '77 (which this one is). Around 1200 in '78. And 9 in '79. This bike is one that I've always wanted. They weren't spectacular performers, but I'm getting older anyway. And my GS's are more than fast enough.

But when i'm given a XLCR1000, what am I supposed to do? Say no? A little rough, and will require some effort. But not missing too much, the exhaust being the biggest part needed. But I've seen a few examples of the pipes for sale, so don't think it'll be too difficult to sort out. Enjoy.

POR-15 Fuel Tank Repair Kit - Lessons Learned and Proper Application

Yes. Don't leave the etch in the tank for a long, long time. I ruined a gorgeous Katana tank that way. Ate through at some of the welded seams. And burned several pinholes around the bottom seam. A new Katana tank ran me $600 bucks, plus decals. And I still need to get it painted, cause it...

Toss that factory tensioner. Get a manual tensioner. Or conversely, I saw somewhere, a modified factory one that functioned as a manual tensioner.

That really looks like an 1150 cover. Much to shallow to be an 1100 cover. And the 1100 covers have a shallow recess for the emblem. The 1150 covers have the raised boss visible in your photo.

I'd go ahead and install APE main bearing studs, and cylinder studs & nuts. More peace of mind. Although to do all that would probably run a couple hundred bucks. Not including shipping. And do you guys pay a VAT down there?

I was going to suggest installing the retainer. The retainer probably restricts any end play in the drum. I imagine the either drum, or the shaft was trying to move outward ever so slightly, and causing a bind.
