DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

    Very smoky gs 550

650 head, cylinders, pistons. New base gasket, valve cover gasket and head gasket. Your carbs may need slightly different jetting. You will need to split the cases, to hog out the top case to fit the 650's larger cylinder sleeves. Can be done with a Dremel or a die grinder, but it takes the...

    Oil cooler from a gs500 on a gs450?

An oil cooler with no airflow won't cool any better than cooing fins on the engine with no airflow.

    Very smoky gs 550

If you decide to do a top end rebuild, consider using a 650 top end. 50% more torque and power for the price of some used parts and a couple gaskets is well worth doing.

    New GS850 Tourer owner!

There is a lot of reading for you to do... http://members.dslextreme.com/users/bikecliff/ For starters, adjust the valves so they don't burn up.

    I have a few 850 cylinders.

    Altitude jetting for GS850.

Yeah, I ride all winter. Not every day, but certainly every week. Especially this winter: http://www.snowbikeworld.com/2016/05/red-bulls-idaho-backcountry-snowbiking

    Snowbike.....

Been doing a bunch or research, I don't have a suitable dirt bike at the moment. Needs to have a lot of power, light weight and electric start would be very useful. Big motocrossers would be great except they mostly don't have electric start. The KTM 450 I just sold would have been great...

    Altitude jetting for GS850.

The 850G with it's CV carbs and with the stock airbox will compensate for elevation very well. No need to rejet anything.

    650 head on 550 engine?

That's about it. You may have a complete later 550 engine, not just the cylinder. Does your bike have the kickstarter? The good news is the 650 top end will fit!

    Parts compatibility 1978 gs750, 1980 gs750

Some of the wiring might work.

    650 head on 550 engine?

No, the 550 pistons are completely the wrong shape for the 650's combustion chamber. The 550s are the old shape like all of the previous GSes, the 650 had new shape which was much better for making power, the 650 is 73 HP where the 550 was 49. That's a 49% power increase for only a 23%...

    650 head on 550 engine?

What's odd is that the 650 pistons won't work with the 550 head. Totally shaped wrong. You may have some custom parts in there... Like 750 pistons and a 650 cylinder bored to fit them? Not sure, post a picture of the end of the engine showing both the head and cylinder?

    Tank Interchangeability GS750

I heard early 850 tanks fit the early 750 but I haven't tried it.

Running lean, what did I damage??

I'd pull the motor and take it apart indoors, in a nice dry warm shop. And put it back together with an 850 top end! Or just find a nice tight GS 1000 engine to bolt in.

Sand in engine block; what should I do?

It falls in when the cylinders are raised up. There is always some crud in between the four center cylinder studs. They are open to the airflow between the cooling fins so some sand, dirt, rust or whatever is always in there. Sometimes more than others, but it's hard to get the cylinders off...
