A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Does a good gas tank need to be sealed

If you have rust under the liner then you need to get that liner out and remove the rust. Otherwise, you will have more trouble/

Does a good gas tank need to be sealed

    What condition? Rust?

Does a good gas tank need to be sealed

I would never coat a tank that's not rusted. If you can get the coating out then that is what I would do. Assuming that your tank was in good shape originally and the tank coating didn't screw it up.

    Carburetur parts question...Sorry if it's a repeat!

Yep, just checked again and they seem to be available from all of the online locations. Good to know. At $18 a piece, they are a bit pricey.

What locations show it as in stock?

Air Pods and Bicycle Inner Tubes: An Experiment

That depends on which bike. The GS 850, 1000, 1100's are a piece of cake to remove the carbs. Takes all of 5 minutes on those. Others???? Some are a real pain in the butt.

    Carburetur parts question...Sorry if it's a repeat!

I may have some 5-5 needle jets. Let me check tonight and I'll get back with you. Those parts haven't been available for quite some time now. Used is pretty much all you can get.

    Compatible Carburetors?

There are no "upgrade" carbs for a stock 550. As others have stated, the 79 came with VM carbs and you should keep it that way. They're good carbs and will allow the bike to run at its best.

    carb problems?

R/R is toast. Time for an upgrade to the SH775.

After market exhaust suggestions? Mine has holes.

Or some bastardized version. Can't really tell without pics. Basing that on the quote: That could mean just stripped of luggage or it could mean cut to shreds.

After market exhaust suggestions? Mine has holes.

Then it's no longer a GK and a V&H or Delkevic should work.

After market exhaust suggestions? Mine has holes.

A 4 into 1 exhaust on a GK may be problematic if you're retaining the rear luggage. Not sure any of the current ones on the market will clear them.

    battery not charging

That would be a big mistake. Making the proper measurements is the ONLY way to verify what the source of the problem is.

Are my carbs supposed to look like this???

If you didn't do them by the tutorial, then I can bet you did miss some aspects. Float seats and needle jets need to be removed along with the pilot screws that are located behind the block-off plug. If those were not removed then you didn't do the job you needed to in order to get the...

Are my carbs supposed to look like this???

No need to fix it. Looks like someone replaced the carb for one from another model/year. The tube being open is OK. Just make sure the rest of the jets are the same.

    Fuel gauge again

The gauge is usually pretty easy to replace alone once you get the center gauge cluster apart. That's the only "hard" part. Takes me about 5 minutes to get the gauge housing apart. After that, it's like 2 screws to remove the fuel gauge.

Air Pods and Bicycle Inner Tubes: An Experiment

So basically you're increased airflow by using pod filters and then restricted them to use stock jetting? Why? No performance benefit and pretty sure it will look butt ugly.

Bike bogging down after carb cleaning

All he did was screw up your carbs. Probably just forced the dirt in deeper using the carb spray alone. Do a proper rebuild per the tutorial and be done with it: http://zeus.mtsac.edu/~cliff/storage/gs/Mikuni_BS-CV_Carburetor_Rebuild_Tutorial.pdf
