A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

    Honda R/R Users Poll

A bad RR, whether OEM or some other brand, overheats the stator by shorting the leads out. This damage might not be apparent immediately but eventually can lead to a failure. Hot oil goes to work on stators too. So does time. I don't see anyone on Honda forums complaining about dead stators too...

Gauge lights - do they all have to work?

13 volts on the grey Check your connections. Provide a better ground for the black

    Immediate high idle

Check the timing. Pull the right side engine cover and check that the advance weights are not stuck. This is a problem where the springs rust and seize or break then the timing goes to 34 BTDC. Engine will race. You can use a timing light on 1 or 4 and see where it stands through a little...

Faced with a carb choice: Which would you choose.

Don't judge the carbs by the MM size. They operate differently so comparing them on bore size is not applicable. I would go 34 MM CV and rebuild them carefully. If you have stock exhaust and airbox stick to the published specs but use a 42.5 pilot jet. The float levels need to be precisely set...

    Immediate high idle

See if the taps on the bottom of the intake boots are leaking. These are for syncing the carbs which you should do as well. Make sure they are snug and check for leaks by spraying wd40 Did you replace the o rings in the air screws correctly?spray along the top carefully Do the clamps on the...

    650 engine

Heads might interchange and the jugs may be the same. Carbs are identical. Even the engine covers are different. Think of the 650E motor as a 550 or 750 with a different bore.

    Brake Help.

I would advertise for a set of calipers and then rebuild them. Don't play around with brakes. Get new brake lines too, stopping is important.

    Power loss, what's next?

This sounds like a lean condition so I would focus on fuel delivery. The pilot circuit could be dirty, the holes in the brass jets are small and can be easily clogged. Check the carb boots and o rings for air leakage when the engine is running by spraying a little wd-40 around the boots.

    Power loss, what's next?

Air filter? Fuel flowing properly>? Check it on PRI Fuel filter? remove it and test. Stuck diaphragms? Make sure they move freely. Leaky carb boots on either side of the carbs?

Really messed up oil pan situation

Just did my oil and used the torque wrench to apply 7 lbs of torque. That's all it needs, not 17, 27, 37 or more.

Purchasing used seat pans (1980 GS1000)

It seems overpriced for just a pan and a rusty one at that. It will require a lot of work to clean it up. For 50 bucks the seller could at least recondition it a little and paint it but that's ebay for you. He saves a bunch on shipping costs too.

    GS1000G Air Filter question

I have a green foam Uni filter in my GS1000G. Is this the best/proper filter for the bike? Outside of a K&N what other filters are there and should they be used instead?

    gs650gl from the grave

I would look for a airbox. the G and L models used the same setup. There is a foam filter inside which may need to be replaced. The airbox will work much better than pods. The 650 will run remarkably well with this setup. The carbs are very well sized to the engine and despite being a little...

For those that advocate using 87 octane in these bikes

This is my experience as well. My 650 runs much better on 93 and I think 70 cents a tank is worth it for better gasoline.

Possible odometer fraud? and also new owner :)

Yes it is a 4 V head and respectable HP numbers too. These are great bikes and I wish we had them down here.

Possible odometer fraud? and also new owner :)

Whether the bike is reliable depends on you. Follow recommendation on this forum for preventative maintenance and spend time on learning how to wrench on the bike and you'll be surprised how reliable they are. Yours is a model we didn't get in the US so there are not as many experts on that...

Lost spark to cylinders 1 and 4

The secondary needs a return path from the base of the spark plug back to the coil, this is usually through the mounting tabs. Although the negative terminal could provide the return this would be unusual.

    GS Engine Rebuilding

You don't need too many special tools beyond the basics and if you know car engines you should be able to refresh a GS engine. A couple of things I learned doing several engines: I use Permatex 97 which seems to work well. Clean the engine before you disassemble it and clean all holes out...

'85 550ES (more rejuvenation than restoration)

I've seen the white paint job and it's not bad. Better than BBQ black with no side panels you see on "Rat Bikes" The tire was my fault, I was directing the process and will swap it when Detorn makes the celebratory ride to my house on it.

Do I need to do a Leak Down Test?

you'll never get another chance to make sure the valves don't leak. level the head, pour gas or kerosene in the chambers and wait 10 minutes A tiny seep is ok, if the chambers empty out there is a problem/
