DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

    Stater and Reg/Rect problems on 82 GS650Ez

Went over to the Aprilia forum for a look at the 'myths' about shunt vs series and as I recall they had been discussed by Jim is some detail on here for those who cared to read. It's not a binary situation about the heat and so on. Jim probably has forgotten more about this stuff than I will...

    Stater and Reg/Rect problems on 82 GS650Ez

That is my understanding also and the 850 diagram confirms it. I bought in to Jim's advice about the charging system and grounding strategy even if the effects of the latter are marginal. In fairness to Suzuki, in their wildest dreams they did not see these machines lasting forty years...

    More melted wires/connectors

Strictly speaking it's only one but then it doubles back so two if you like.

    Help with Ignition Points

It may be that there were two different types. The first type in this link looks like what you have. https://www.cmsnl.com/suzuki-gs400x-1977-b-usa-e03_model16010/partslist/

    Suzuki GS750. using oil.

And some..... You know it's time to fix leaks when you plant your boot at a stop and it slips :)

    Suzuki GS750. using oil.

Second for Brian's comments on stem seals. Where did you get the replacements from? I got some with a complete kit from NE and I just knew they were junk by the feel of how they went on so went and got better ones. Not OEM but when it was done I had no start up smoke and practically zero oil...

1979 GS850, looking for oil pan replacement procedure

Be extra double careful with lefty loosy righty tighty down there as with everything upside down.......... It's easy to strip something your brain decided was tight.

    Hello from New Zealand

Hi JT and welcome :) It's often said and probably true that every possible problem has been discussed and sorted somewhere on here. Finding it can be tricky.

POD Filters - Does Shape Matter?

In the 80s I recall reading that Honda devoted 40% of their research computer time to exhausts. Trying to get the perfect, or at least optimal, timing of shockwave bounces to keep the charge in the cylinder until the exhaust valve was fully shut. That was enough for me to decide that the stock...

"Headlamp" and "Stoplamp" check lights on instrument panel intermittent

Sounds like a ground issue at the instrument cluster. I would check the ground wire pin at the plug to the instrument panel.

    Shifter interference

Have the the stock setup - no rear sets? How far below the top of the footpeg is the gearshift rubber? Any chance of a picture?

    Exhaust header temperature

I'm thinking that the real question may be at what rate is heat leaving the cylinders through the walls and head. The fact that the inners may have less area on the outside would not necessarily mean that the heat outflow is any less. If you think about the hotter surface, it has to be...

    Exhaust header temperature

Seems reasonable and you'd think the builders thought about that and figured out how to make that difference less than the point where it makes a difference. Air cooled motors have relatively unstable operating temperatures anyway. At a guess that variability is more than the differences between...

Matching tubes to tires ... or not

Pressure is a balancing act between not too high to reduce your contact patch and not so low as to cause excessive sidewall flexing and heating. A rule of thumb is to check before and after a ride and if the hot pressure is 10% above the cold you are in the sweet spot. More than that and you are...

    Damaged barrel surface

My 850 was badly gouged on the lower surface. I sprayed the base gasket with high build high temperature Aluminium paint in 2015 and it was fine until I sold it last month. Any pictures, deep is a relative term? :)

    VX800 stock pillion seat

Has anyone experience of the comfort or not of the VX800 pillion seat for shorter trips, less than an hour, coffee shop runs in the main? I sold the GS850 and the KZ400 is a bit too small for two. She feels perched on the edge.

Please help dropping centre cylinders 850

Might also be worth having a close look at the coil supply plugs. They can look okay from the outside but hide a lot of corrosion. Another vote for the old Piranha system. The kill and ignition contacts are always worth a clean. If they are taking some voltage it wouldn't take much at the coil...

Engine oil leak (from base gasket)

My 2c worth. I replaced the head and base in 2015 with NE gaskets. The entire engine set was less than an oem headgasket. However the stem seals were junk and I had to get replacements. The lower deck was in bad shape so I sprayed the base gasket both sides with high build, high temperature...

    1979 GS850 Ignition Coil Help

Could you try swapping the HT leads between 2&3. If the problem doesn't move the ignition system is off the hook.
