A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

    Oil leak from Clutch seal

If it ain't broke don't fix it :) I would leave the clutch well alone unless you have issues. Headbolts do loosen after a gasket replacement. I got almost a half turn after a few hundred miles. Check the torque and see if that sorts it. If not you are most likely looking at replacing the head...

    Oil leak from Clutch seal

I got it out with a hook and small screwdriver, no opening cases. If memory serves the original is 9mm deep. I made do with a 7mm, all they had in stock, and it was fine. The size should be visible on the rubber upper part.

    81 GS1100G Carb Syncronization

Would clothes pins do it? :) The actual readings are not important. Balance is. The motor is an air pump. Against a closed throttle plate it's pulling a vacuum and the manifold pressure should drop way below atmospheric. Talking in inches of mercury, one atmosphere is just under 30" Hg. When you...

    Sensor bypass/left switch bypass

The speedo and tacho are mechanical, driven by cables from the front wheel hub and the camshaft. Alternatives are available. You can get a tacho that takes a pickup from the ignition. speedo would have to have the same gearing as the old. If memory serves it's 2.4 to 1`? Alternative warning...

    Sensor bypass/left switch bypass

Assuming you mean the starter cut out switch? It's a normally open switch on the Yellow/Green wire from the starter push button to the starter relay coil. Shorting the switch out leaves you normally closed. Over here we don't have that switch but I always pull the clutch anyway. One day it will...

    81 GS1100G Carb Syncronization

The ingenuity of previous owners or their mechanics knows no bounds. I don't believe it possible to overstate just how many ways thing can be done wrong, left disconnected, parts omitted etc etc. Many times it the reason a bike changes hands.

    81 GS1100G Carb Syncronization

Can't take anything for granted on an old machine, irrespective of mileage. At that age you could well have corrosion on the ign and kill switch contacts and coil supply plugs. All bets are off if the electrical system is not in good shape. A lot of carburettor issues are, in fact, electrical.

    81 GS1100G Carb Syncronization

The restrictor Nessism is talking about is to damp out the pulses making it easier to read the gauge. Mercury columns have little or no damping and need restrictor plugs. Your gauges may be smart enough to damp or not. Only one way to find out. Is .087 small enough, maybe. Watch out for the...

    gs850g gear indicator

Before opening the dash you could go to the plug at the gear switch tail. It's up above the airbox. Open the five wire plug and ground the red wire coming back from the dash. This should light up fifth if the bulb is okay. It could probably use a clean anyway.

    Clutch cable replacement . . . .

What angle is between the cable and the clutch arm? Anything much away from ninety and you lose mechanical advantage. Are new and old the same length? How does your route compare with the service manual? Up between inlets 1& 2, forward under the coils and under the tank hanger rubber? There is a...

Friction Modifiers as mentioned in the 1985 GS450GA owners manual

Synthetics are supposed to be more stable, slower to degrade. In that sense, yes, there is a benefit. However if you will be changing after a few thousand miles anyway, you would be right in asking if you will ever see any of that benefit. Cars running full synthetics now have 18000 mile change...
