A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

    Ascot.....

The twin is the one I'm considering, like this one: https://photos.smugmug.com/My-First-Gallery/i-htn3gQH/0/O/The%20Loser.jpg I live in a very dry place, dryer than Arizona, dryer than Utah, rust isn't an issue on anything. I have a few frames that have been sitting outside for years, the...

GS850...how concerned should I be of overheating it in traffic?

Just curious how nikasil helps the rings... Does the whole cylinder stay cooler for some reason?

GS850...how concerned should I be of overheating it in traffic?

A little breeze, or a little common sense goes a long way. If you are worried shut it off until it's time to move.

    Valve Clearance for 1978 Gs750E

The other way. The valves wear into the head, the clearances get tighter

    Ascot.....

Somehow, I've been looking at Honda Ascots in the local Craigslist, ever since reading about "the Loser" which was an Ascot that was ridden very hard and put away wet. Are they any good? Anything to avoid? Carbs hard to work on?

GS850...how concerned should I be of overheating it in traffic?

Meh, if it's tuned well it will start in a fraction of a second when it's hot, not much of a drain on the charging system no matter how often you do it.

    The Clutch is always engaged

That's pretty much normal. The clutch doesn't really have much to do with the shifting. Engaged or disengaged? What does it do when you ride it?

    The Clutch is always engaged

Disengaged or engaged? People get this idea backwards sometimes. Is the clutch slipping or is it not releasing at all? Did you adjust the clutch helix correctly? (The worm gear thing that pushes on the pushrod) It needs to have some slack in it, and it does get tighter with clutch plate...

Running lean, what did I damage??

As Chris Sorbi about his 850 pistons. Holes the size of a dime melted in each one, all caused by lean running from an air leak.

    Oil changes and winter storage

Restored three, four, maybe five GSes a year for decades. A few other bikes too, but mostly dead GSes. It's kind of a hobby.

    Oil changes and winter storage

Must be lucky, or maybe you actually maintain the bike once in a while. I've bought dozens of used GSes which were dead from being stored wrong, with carburetors clogged to the point of not running at all being by far the most common problem.

    Oil changes and winter storage

Like I said, if your petcock is perfect that works fine. If it leaks even a little bit I hope you enjoy the time spent cleaning carburetors.

    Oil changes and winter storage

What Chuck said, Stabil or the like will keep fuel from going bad in the tank, but it won't prevent it evaporating from the carbs and leaving a residue behind. If you are not 100% certain your petcock leaks absolutely nothing disconnect the fuel line too. All the float bowl draining in the...

    Oil Level Sight Glass (650L)

The 650 uses regular motor oil for the transmission or final drive where the driveshaft comes out, there are two drain plugs but only one filler cap to add oil. Not pulling the second plug will keep a lot of oil in there... The 650 is a bit of a queer duck in a lot of ways.
  17. tkent02

    Oil Level Sight Glass (650L)

OK if you don't pull the second drain plug, the oil in the gearbox stays in there, when you put in the new oil it's going to be way over the window. Tip it to the left far enough, I bet you will see the oil level.
  18. tkent02

    Oil changes and winter storage

That always seemed silly to me. New oil will perhaps gain a tiny bit of water over the winter from condensation if it's in a humid climate with large daily temperature changes, but that water will just boil off the first time the engine gets hot anyway. I think they are just trying to sell...
