A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

    Quieter muffler packing?

Same here, old Kerker, and it's on a 550 so it's wound out all the time. Pretty much redlined or better everywhere you go. Now the 550 is a 675, so you don't need to wind it out quite so much, but it's still loud. And it does sound sweet. Just too damned loud.

    Smoked 450

Did you find the oversized pistons too?

    Quieter muffler packing?

Tried it on my old GS1000, don't think it was any quieter.

Not starting after Petcock replacement - 82 650

Hmmm, what exactly was done to the valves?

    Smoked 450

500 cylinders and pistons are plentiful and cheap as dirt on eBay. It's an easy bolt on mod and adds about 10% to the displacement, which means a lot of torque. Get the cam chain tensioner from the 500 too. Or I have a nice tight set of 450 cylinders and pistons I will sell.

    Quieter muffler packing?

The difference in noise between fresh packing and none is tenfold, or more. If I could find some that would make it quieter than the regular fiberglass stuff, I'd be all over it.

    different calipers...help

If this bike was meant to be used in traffic I'd go the Saltymonk mod for sure. He has some rotors and calipers now too I think.

    Number of stator poles question.

With 18 pole stator and a 12 pole rotor, I don't think it would really charge at all. There is no 16.

    Number of stator poles question.

Not true, the early 550s had 18 poles and a kickstarter.

    different calipers...help

The later ones are quite a bit better than the earlier ones... But there are far better brakes available now that also bolt right up..... http://www.thegsresources.com/_forum/showthread.php?140253-Twinpot-Brake-upgrade-on-78-Skunk&highlight=twin+pot

Did they take your nice slotted rotors too?

    different calipers...help

Looks like the stock calipers from a pre 1980 GS, they don't work anywhere near as well as the later ones with rectangular pads. A lot of folks put the later ones on the earlier bikes, someone probably took the good brakes for themselves when they sold your bike.

    Number of stator poles question.

I think there are 4 magnets in the 12 pole rotor, and 6 on the 18 pole rotor. The number of poles on the stator has to be a multiple of 4 or 6... The stator makes a little bit of current every time the magnet goes by each of it's poles. It's all wired together in such a way that when the...

    GS750 running hot

A slight bit of change you can notice if you are paying attention is different from this: "If I adjust the clutch to disengage when cold, it will not disengage when hot." This is NOT what the magazine writers were talking about.

    Number of stator poles question.

They all have three leads. It's 18, not 16. Just designed to be more efficient, make more electrical power at lower RPM I think, but it does need the correct rotor to work with it. The rotor has more magnets, which are smaller, to match the closer spaced poles in the stator. Some electrical...
