A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

    Engine oil problem

It seems like the petcock is leaking slightly, not much but maybe enough to cause the carbs to overflow since I don't ride the bike all that often. Should I get a new one rather than trying to fix it and where's the best place to find one? I was thinking of getting one without the vacuum line...

    Engine oil problem

Thanks for your quick answer. I didn't particularly notice that it smelled of fuel but at the time that hadn't occured to me. Come to think of it, there seemed to be more used oil than what I had put in during the last oil change. I'll check the petcock first, that could be leaking. Next would...

    Engine oil problem

I changed the oil in my 1981 GS450 this morning and was astonished at how thin the used oil was. It looked and felt like coloured water with barely any viscosity. I had only done about a thousand miles since the last oil change. I have also noticed that the bike is revving higher than previously...

    Gel battery

Can I replace the AGM battery with a Gel? The charging voltage on my bike is 14.5V to 15V. Thanks in advance.

    Mystery hose

Thanks for your replies. It was the drain hose at the bottom of the airbox.

    Mystery hose

I found this hose sitting under my 1981 GS450 and can't figure out where it came from. The bike seems to run fine without it. Can anyone help? Thanks in advance.

    Choke RPM

Thanks for your reply. It seems that it's normal then. I might have not been pulling the choke out all the way (mine is situated under the tank).

    Choke RPM

What RPM should a 450 go up to with the choke fully activated? I've noticed that it would rev at about 1800 RPM previously, but now it's going up to nearly 3000 RPM. Without the choke, it's still the same, about 1000 RPM. Thanks in advance for your help.

    Cross-pipe repair.

The cross-pipe on my 450 has rusted through and I've now got a hole that's about half an inch wide. Would any of these exhaust repair kits do the job or do I have to take it to a shop to be welded? Thanks in advance.

    1981 GS450 Horn

My horn has stopped working. I've tried another horn, same result and the return wire is ok. I've been looking at the circuit diagram and it seems a B/W wire coming straight from the regulator supplies the 12V to one side of the horn switch and a green wire then takes the 12V to the horn itself...

    1981 GS450E clutch cable

I am replacing the clutch cable and I took photos of how the old cable was routed before removing it. Unfortunately, I deleted the photos that showed how the cable is routed under the fuel tank. Can anybody post a photo showing how it's done or maybe explain? Thanks

    1981 GS450 - hard to start

Well the bike had been standing for three or four weeks and this morning same thing happened, wouldn't start. So I hooked up a fully charged car battery and started right off. Looks like the battery is on its way out and losing its charge quicker than it should when left standing for a while. So...

    Valve cover

Apologies for not coming back sooner and thanks for your advice. Do those screws take a P2 or P3 driver?

    Valve cover

This is the first time I will be having a look at the valve clearances on my GS450. Before starting, I have a few queries which I hope someone can help me with: 1) Do I need to replace the half-moons? 2) Do I put sealant on the half-moons? 3) I'm not keen on taking the RHS engine cover off...

    1981 GS450 - hard to start

I did a compression test and got 147/159psi. Not perfect, but good enough I think. The plug gaps were actually too small (less than 0.6mm) so I increased those to 0.7mm. What I'll do next time that the bike has been standing for a while is to use another battery to start it up, that will...

    1981 GS450 - hard to start

You might well be right and the problem is not a lack of fuel. I checked the flow from the petcock and I actually was surprised at the amount of fuel that came out in a few seconds. So that rules out a petcock problem. I haven't checked the compression for a while, the last time I did both...

    1981 GS450 - hard to start

Many thanks for your suggestions. I'll try to check the flow out of the petcock and go on from there. I have a phobia about tinkering with the carbs, they're way beyond my level of expertise.

    1981 GS450 - hard to start

Thanks for your quick reply. I will try to get a better petcock, the only problem being that with postage and taxes it will cost me double of what it would cost in the States. Since the bike runs fine once it starts, I can rule out a blocked fuel hose. The only other thing I can think of is a...

    1981 GS450 - hard to start

For the last few months, my GS450 has been very difficult to start if it had been sitting there for more than a week or ten days. Before that, using the priming circuit usually did the trick but now I just about have to flatten the battery to get it to start. It works ok once it has started. My...
