A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

    GS1100L project is (probably) completed!

Well, today I took my first ride around town on my 1982 GS1100GL. The engine sounded a bit like rocks rattling in a coffee can at first, but after about 10 miles it started sounding like a normal motorcycle, something for which I was very grateful. From dealing with the carbs to putting in new...

    Is the shim exchange dead?

Ha! Crap, I forgot about Z1. I was just looking at Suzuki and Ebay. Thanks for the reminder.

    Is the shim exchange dead?

Awesome. I should know whether I need them by the end of the week.

    Is the shim exchange dead?

Thanks, see above message to Nessism.

    Is the shim exchange dead?

It depends. I took all my measurements, and cylinders 2 and 3 are the only ones out of spec. However, I have the bevel gears out (yeah, it's a shaftie) and I need to start it up and see if engine oil is coming through the trans output shaft seal into the bevel gear housing. That was my suspicion...

Removing the oil pan after 43 years.

Here's a before pic of my '82 gs1100 pan. Don't forget to clean the screen just above the pan.

    Is the shim exchange dead?

I'm doing my valves and came across posts on the shim exchange. The guy who was in charge, Ghostgs1, seems not to have posted since July of 2022. Did someone take over?

82 GS1100 Fork spring guide substitute part?

No worries, I cranked the impact wrench up to 110 psi and both of those bolts came out. Cleaning the parts now and waiting on the springs (Sonic), which are "out for delivery." To hold the damper rod I used a 1/2 inch drive ratchet, daisy-chained all my 1/2 extensions and topped it with a 19mm...

82 GS1100 Fork spring guide substitute part?

Yeah, that's it. Doesn't seem to be a vital part. BTW, that allen bolt on the bottom of the fork is stuck HARD. Not even my air impact wrench could loosen it. This is making it harder to get the old seals out. One is leaky so won't hold enough pressure to blow it out, and the other would not...

82 GS1100 Fork spring guide substitute part?

Rebuilding my forks. Opened up the left one and there is no fork spring guide, part number 51172-38010. No longer available from Suzuki and none on Ebay. It doesn't seem like it would be extremely model-specific. Has anyone heard of a substitute? TIA.

    Shafted! Secondary drive quandary

I see it's in 2 cylinder now, not sure if I did that by accident or admin switched it. Anyway, I have it all pulled out. Drive gear bearings seem fine so I'm not going to press apart that assembly. Driven bearings were a little janky and probably what caused the seal to leak, so they and the...

    Shifter oil seal removal tip

If you're riding an '82, I can make no promises!

    Shifter oil seal removal tip

This will probably work for other seals and other bikes as well. The location of the GS1100 shifter oil seal (down in a hole and behind the frame) makes getting it out kind of a pain. Here's what worked for me. Lisle makes a tool called the "Shaft Type Seal Puller," product number 58430. The...

    Shafted! Secondary drive quandary

For those of you keeping score, this GS1100GL job started with rebuilding the carbs and moved to new valve stem seals, which I first tried to do without removing the head. It's definitely possible, but I got sick of playing with improvised tools and removed the head and cylinders. I installed...

No fuel through carb, where do I start?

As soon as I covered the intake, cylinder number one fired. Take my hand away, it goes out. I can't get too excited about riding with my hand over the intake, so I guess this means pull the carbs and clear the pilot circuit? I swapped out the jets when I did the carbs (making sure that the sizes...

No fuel through carb, where do I start?

Yeppers. Just finished putting everything back together. I used Spiegler braided steel lines. Ordered custom lengths (dumped the splitter) on Friday, they arrived Wednesday. I like Spieglers because you can turn the fitting to fine-tune the connection. The old lines were original and the...

No fuel through carb, where do I start?

If I get no answer from taking off the airbox, maybe I should just pop off the carbs and open that one up. I knew what you meant in your post because I had the same problem and had to go back and edit. Thanks again.

No fuel through carb, where do I start?

Thanks, I suspect that it's something simple. I probably put something back together wrong, and maybe this will help me figure out what it is. I'm reassembling the brakes later today after the caliper rebuild kits arrive in the mail, so this will give me something to do until they get here...
