A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Thanks to all for your replies. Looks like my non revving above 3k issue was down to a stiff advance/retard mechanism - ie it wasn't working as it should.

Welcome from near Salisbury, Wiltshire Joe. You might be pleasantly surprised as to how many parts are still available from Suzuki. Check out places like Fowlers in the UK and CMSNL in Holland. As well as having a retail arm, Fowlers is a big wholesaler to the dealers here in the UK, so always...

Huzzah, found it! Steering me to look past the chain guard is wot dun it. It is attached to the underside of the air filter housing - sincere apologies if someone had suggested this to me previously, but I was too daft to understand. Next question, would a dodgy igniter box cause my symptoms...

Good morning and Happy New Year everyone! :) I've finally got around to reorganising the garage and the GS550 is now in the "working" area! I still can't find any sign of the igniter box. Photo of under the right side engine/crank case attached - should I be able to move one side...

I'll have to whip the tank off and have a peek under there. However, as you can see from the photos, I have limited access at the moment! :)

Thanks. Pretty sure that the wires go back into the main harness. Re posting of photos, the Yamaha Enduros forum has issues with accepting images from members' hardware, so we have to use a third party hosting site - I use Imgur, and it is what I used here, as forum said my photos were too big.

Thanks again. Three more photos attached - 1) signal generator 2) wires routed upwards and 3) wires ending in block connector. Weird.

Thanks. Yes, that's the part, and I found it listed on the CMSNL website (very handy for research) for the 1980 GS550E. I just can't find where it is located on my bike.

Thanks. My wires appear to connect with the main loom via a block connector (inside the boot in the first photo). Three photos of the area where I'm looking are attached.

As per the title, I may well be having (another!) senior moment here but, for the life of me, I can't find the igniter for the cdi on my 1980 US market GS550E. Any help in guiding me towards this would be much appreciated. I did a search of the forum (in fact, it was a general internet search...
