If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

1980 GS550E igniter location.

Gr8uncleal

Forum Newbie
As per the title, I may well be having (another!) senior moment here but, for the life of me, I can't find the igniter for the cdi on my 1980 US market GS550E. Any help in guiding me towards this would be much appreciated.

I did a search of the forum (in fact, it was a general internet search that led me to the forum), but the only similar thread I could find was for a GS650.

Many thanks.

You could follow the wires from your signal generator. Should go right to it. Mine is right under the starter relay on the left side.

Can't find it on the bike or can't find a replacement? GSes didn't use a CDI. They had an igniter.

Not finding an '80 550E, did find a 550L. Probably similar.

As recommended previously, follow the wires from your signal generator.

My wires appear to connect with the main loom via a block connector (inside the boot in the first photo).

Three photos of the area where I'm looking are attached.

Look on the right side (as you sit on the bike) of the air intake box shown in your second picture. The signal generator is on the right side of the crank shaft. It has wires come from it. Those wires go to the igniter.

Your first and third picture is of the left (stator) side of the bike.

Strange…remove the round cover over the signal generator setup ….maybe some PO opted for dyna setup, which eliminates the factory ignitor

Thanks again.

Three more photos attached - 1) signal generator 2) wires routed upwards and 3) wires ending in block connector. Weird.

Then where do the wires coming out of the other side of that block connector go to? As Tom guessed, maybe they go directly to the coils, if they’re Dyna aftermarket coils. Though your signal generator appears to be original OEM.

Good on you for figuring out posting pictures, honestly. Many struggle.

Thanks.

Pretty sure that the wires go back into the main harness.

Re posting of photos, the Yamaha Enduros forum has issues with accepting images from members' hardware, so we have to use a third party hosting site - I use Imgur, and it is what I used here, as forum said my photos were too big.

I'll have to whip the tank off and have a peek under there. However, as you can see from the photos, I have limited access at the moment! :)

Haha. That's a nice problem to have. Great collection. That green Yamaha looks like my very fist bike, a 1972 DT250. Same color too.

Green bike is 1973 model DT3 - 250cc and the frame dated stamped as manufactured in 1972. The silver bike next to it is a 1972 model RT2 (360cc). My 1974 DT360A is currently in the greenhouse!

Good morning and Happy New Year everyone! :)

I've finally got around to reorganising the garage and the GS550 is now in the "working" area!

I still can't find any sign of the igniter box.

Photo of under the right side engine/crank case attached - should I be able to move one side of what that spring is attached to?

Anyway, a different approach might be for me to list my issues and then maybe someone can point me in the right direction.

1) Bike starts readily enough. I started it this morning using a remote tank - petrol tank removed and therefore (vacuum?) hole on the top of the carbs open.

2) It won't rev above about 3k.

3) To my mind, it is running hot - at least it appears hotter than other bikes I've owned.

4) Brand new Delkevic exhaust system fitted. In "road" standard, so baffle in place.

5) I would say that the bike ran hot and didn't really rev out before I swapped the original exhaust for the Delkevic. By the way, if your wondering why I changed it, the original left side disintegrated when I removed it to get to the rear wheel axle!

6) New air filter fitted, but issue remains whether or not the filter is present.

Any pointers would be much appreciated and apologies for taking so long to pick up the thread.

Thanks.

When using the aux fuel tank you need to plug that vacuum port on the front of carb# 2, or plug the hose coming from it might be easier.

The ignitor is somewhere around the airbox. You might want to remove both side covers and the chain guard, that should provide enough vewing room to find it.

Also, put a fan in front of the engine. Never run an air cooled motorcycle more than a few minutes without air flow.
