1000G suddenly not firing at all

Yeah prime can cause that. Change the oil, ride it for 50 km or so and change it again and the filter as well.... But also check the petcock by removing the the fuel line and vacuum line and check for leaks with petcock in the on position.....

Not saying I don't believe you guys, but could someone explain why this is causing the bike to not start? I just want to know because I would like to learn. Oh, and like I said, I had the bike left on Prime overnight....

Sounds like a fuel related problem for sure.

Were any of the plugs wet when you pulled them? Were they black or normal color?

Open the air cleaner and see if it smells of fuel. I'm betting a stuck float has flooded the engine. Makes sense that it would start and then stall. The petcock would open once the engine starts and more fuel would pour into the engine and flood it. Pull the airbox and see if fuel pours out of a carb with the petcock turned to prime. That will locate which carb is the violator. The petcock may not be bad. It may just be a stuck float if you left it in prime. If the petcock was always flowing, then you would have an empty tank and puddle on the floor.

If you find a stuck float, then don't try to start the engine until you get the problem fixed and the oil and filter changed.

Stuck float would flood the engine and airbox with fuel causing it to run too rich on more then one cylinder. Too rich to fire. You said it would start if you held the throttle plates open. That would confirm the flooded condition. Once the engine starts, and you have vacuum, the petcock would open up and allow the engine to be flooded again.

For what it's worth, I fought this with my 80 GS1000G for some time until I replaced all the floats. Turns out the aftermarket float valves that I bought to avoid this were complete crap and had to put in some old stock floats instead.

I did get it to fire once with it wide open, I have only gotten it to fire maybe 3 times and I didn't have to hold it wide open with the other two attempts. The plugs were not wet but they were pretty black. I am going to go and smell the air box, then drain the oil and put fresh stuff back in it. (I planned to do it a few times anyways since the bike is new to me to flush anything out)

Also, I am very surprised if it is carb related...the carbs were not only ultrasonically cleaned...but chef also took them, soaked them and did a rebuild on all the o-rings... I will also double check the petcock for any leaking in the on position..

If you left it on Prime, that's the problem. The petcock may or may not be good, prime will do what you said. How far over the top of the oil window is the oil level? Or at least how much oil came out whan you drained it? 2 0r 3 gallons?

Wow, I'm not even sure what to say, I changed the oil and right away the bike fired right up. I would have never thought to even check the oil had it not been for you guys.

Here is my thought: The oil did smell slightly like gas, but it did not seem to be much different of a consistency, maybe slightly more viscous but there was not a lot of extra liquid in the drain pan. I think maybe some got in there but not a whole lot. What I think caused more of an issue was that over the last few days we had the oil cooler removed, and the stator cover off multiple times (one time the bike was accidentally leaned and a good bit of oil came out). I don't know if these bikes have something that prevents them from firing when oil level is low, but maybe low pressure or something made the bike not fire? What do you guys think?

P.S. the air filter never smelled of gas she I checked it

Thats not it. There's no pressure or quantity thing other than the oil light. I have one sitting disassembled on my garage floor right now that despite low oil quantity, kept on firing until the pistons and things melted and metal came out.

It's a bit on the ugly side.

it hasn't had a side stand cut out fitted to it?? found a few bike that have and it stumps me time and time again as not something I think of straight away.

So then what the heck!?! Why on earth would it be fine as soon as it got an oil change? I hate fixing things without knowing exactly what the fix was and why...

You may be clever...but that doesn't give me an answer! Haha if anyone has the answer to this "magic" please assist :)

Tkent explained it on another thread which I can't find right now. But essentially gas was leaking past a jet that was not designed to hold back the amount it receives on prime. It sounds like it eventually cleared the surplus gas out and operated normally....

Changing the oil had nothing to do with it other then the time it took to get it all done. My guess is that the excessive fuel that poured into the air filter finally evaporated and allowed you to get it started.

Yep. Just went out to start it this morning and it is the same thing all over again, after cranking on the starter over and over again it is not starting, I checked a spark plug..it was not wet. So now what.

Did you check the vacuum and fuel outlets on the petcock for leakage ? { in the on position } What colour are the spark plugs ? A pic ? I've had to replace the spark plugs in the past after a starting issue....

Hmmm...after playing with the choke and trying to start the bike without the fuel lines connected (so it wouldn't be sucking in more fuel) I got it to idle here and there with the choke. Eventually I re-connected the fuel lines and the bike started.

Something is definitely fuel related and since chef rebuilt my carbs, I think I am going to start with the petcock and remove it to make sure its good and cleaned out then go from there..

If the petcock is not leaking when in the on position and gas pours out in the prime position the petcock should not be the problem. Have you checked with out the lines connected ? Draining the float bowls might help as well.
