Did suzuki (in their infinite wisdom) put a 110 MPH cutoff on my 700E???
It pulls strong to 8000 RPM in top gear then stops (which is 110 MPH).
If they did, does anyone know how to defeat it????

Not that I'm aware of... it could be ignition related (loosing advance) or fuel related (running out) 8k is just hitting the power band strong!

Well, my 82 1100E will bury the tach needle well past the 9500rpm redline in 5th, so I doubt there is a cutout. That level of Naziism didn't hit for quite a few years after your bike was produced.

I would guess ignition or fuel as well. Does your bike pull past 8000rpm in the lower gears? Try it in 3rd and see how it does at high rpm.

I've found on the few times I had my 700 up in that range, as soon as I hit 8000, the engine almost instantly revved up to 10,000. I figure that is because the engine has so little flywheel effect. But it definitely bumped redline.

What you may have is a Tach that isn't reading well anymore - I know mine really lags behind what the engine is actually doing once I get above 4500 to 5000rpm. I guess it's getting a little old and tired like its owner. :-k

A stock GS700 will pull redline in 5th, which translates to about 125-130 mph. Mine will still make it to 120+ mph, but needs some room to get there.

Pulls great

Pulls great

Thanks guys, it pulls great in 1-4, and it pulls great to 8000 in 5, I'll play with it and get back to you.

Re: Gs700

Is it a stock front and rear sprocket? I have buried the speedometer on my 700E before, so no, there should not be a govenor on the bike :)

I had this happen before as well. It has been over ten years so my memory may be foggy or confused, but as I recall I replaced the clutch and friction plates and it did not solve it. I learned after this that the higher gear plates get little wear. But I was told to adjust the clutch pin inside the sprocket cover, and it worked. Not sure this helps as many of us are not trying to redline 5th gear anymore :)

could be jetting. has anyone cut holes in the airbox or messed with the jets?

I don't know about that Mark.
Wouldn't it be a level of Naziism that forced the Japanese to make their bikes 700s to appease Harley back in the '80s:mad:

I am not sure, but I thought that was for insurance purposes?

No, it was done directly to help Harely compete with the Japs.
As if people bought them to go fast.

That's correct - from 1985 to 1988 there was an excise tax placed on any bike over 700ccs (except Harleys) as they petitioned Reagan to help them compete in the free market system. The Tax was on a graduated scale, starting at around 20% and dropping some each year until it was allowed to "sunset" and come off the books.

If you've buried the 140 mph speedo on your 700, you've either got a highly modified 700, or a highly optimistic speedometer.

When brand new, the stock GS700 topped out right around 130, and took over half a mile to get there from a standing start.

Nah, that was trade politics. They could build 750's if they wanted, but there was a tax on any bike bigger than 700cc and they built 699cc bikes to beat the tax.

I was talking about the Naziism of politicians deciding how fast a motorcycle should be allowed to go, instead of the marketplace and the rider of said motorcycle.

My 700 bounces the speedo at the bottom.....I'm stock except the CR carbs the 4 into 1 exhaust the one tooth up on the front sprocket , ignition advancer, a few other little things...can't remember what else, hmmmmmm sounds stock to me.....LOL

In fact, HD petitioned the gov't to lift the tariff early as they had recovered well enough they didn't feel the need for it, so the tariff was lifted.

The reason they recovered was revamping their tooling and products, not because of any tariff.

I'd say that is a HIGHLY optimistic speedo.

The 700+ tarriff would not have happened without the cooperation of the Japanese and German governments who witheld placing similar tarriffs on American products; and hardly-ridable owes a great many thanks to Honda for the help in revamping their manufacturing proccess and BMW for the engineering of evolution engine (still a piece of junk in my opinion).
Back on topic now, my 700e(100% stock for now) with 31k will pull cleanly to about 120 or so at that point the tach (wich does need work) is bouncing around like a two year old on Starbucks and the speedo is beginning to show early signs of alzhiemers.
