modern traffic requires modern gauges :)

can a 140mph speedometer gauge be swapped in place of the 90mph unit? i guess you would need the drive gear off the same bike, provided the wheels were the same size, in order for it to work, correct?
i have seemingly rare 18" 'E' wheels so i am not sure if that would be a possibility

thanks in advance!

as long as the ratio between the speedo, speedo drive gear and the wheel were the same it would in theory work, you may have to pull stuff of of different bikes to get it to work though.

that might be difficult to do. i see that others have experimented with swapping the clusters and had high reading speedometers although the odometer functioned correctly. i guess i could try to find a Canadian specimen of my same vintage and try that, too

oldschoolorange, did the 500cc engine into your GS400 plug and play? i have heard that the 500 (or maybe a 550) can swap into my GS450 without too much trouble

I put the 140 speedo in my 1100 and it works real good. I checked it at one of the streets that have the " Here's your mph radar speed checking trailer things on the side of the road thingies" and mine was good. But mine was off a year later bike just like mine. Something wath a greater model and year difference may offer a few more challenges.

in my search for a working 140 mph speedometer, i am wondering which bikes cam with an 18" front wheel? i guess the gearing is the same as long as the wheel diameter is the same...

well, then i'll just swap out the front forks for a proper gauge :-D the thought of having a 23 y/o 450cc bike built up with a GSXR front and rear end certainly entertains my imagination... i'll see if i can find one and peer at the drive gear

The 400-500 engine swap was very easy, pretty much just plug and play. I also installed the harness from the 500. Now I have an engine that is a few pounds lighter, a few more hp and Parts that I can still buy

depends on how much you like an adventure, you could use one of these:

flatline- nice idea! i think it is overkill on this machine, however. i am merely disgruntled that i max it out in traffic and the occasional push. i am enjoying the 'cafe' look to the original gauges, as well

i appreciate the response and when the time comes...

btw, oldschoolorange, i am keeping an eye out for a 500cc motor for that very reason. i have seen some of your earlier posts. my engine is running great, so it would have to be a good deal
