16 valve crank bearing identification and thrust bearing

I've been scratching my head for a while now regarding this crankshaft that I pulled out of this motor and I have a couple questions that hopefully someone can shed some light on. 1) when I pulled the crank from the case there was no thrust bearings and every part diagram I look at pictures the thrust bearing with the crank so I ordered one and they are not even close to fitting the clearance is way too tight. So was there a certain year that suzuki started implementing these thrust bearings? It's a 1981 and if they are supposed to be there I'm guessing the previous owner took it apart before and left them out and I just got the wrong size. 2) the crankshaft has the typical A and B markings for identifying the crankcase bearings but for the connecting rods the only markings are on the 1 and 4 journals, there is no numbers for identifying the 2 and 3 journals. Has anyone encountered this before and should I just measure and pick the closest bearing size for these two unmarked journals. Any insight would be greatly appreciated because I am stumped. I can provide pictures if it would help.

Thanks guys,
Shane

I'm thinking I will just order a couple different bearings for the two unmarked journals and plastigage to check the clearance and pick the best one but I still don't know about that thrust bearing does anybody have any input? Number 8 is what I am talking about but as I stated before I ordered one and there is no way it is fitting.

what bike are you working on, I am not a expert , one of the motor guys will chime in ,but if It is a 1100E that Attached pics I don't think is right for your bike ,

It's a 81 750e. That thrust bearing wasn't there when I took it apart but the parts diagram leads me to believe that I need it.

Get a smallest set of rod bearing and size the rods with it. Even check the rod that have the #'s on them the bearings have a color code on them also. Set all your clearances for rod and crank bearings at .002 they like a little more than the book says. As for the thrush bearing same deal get the smallest one and size it to the correct size bearing. I believe there is supposed to be one but I don't have a book on it.

make sure you clean all the plastie gauge off with some lacquer thinner and then use some assembly lube.
and replace all the bearings rod and crank while your in there.

Thanks for the info I'll try to do some more digging on that thrust bearing.

Are you sure that part no. 8 is not still lodged in the cases? On my 1150 these C rings are sorta bearing holders. In my very inexperienced engine building life, I would expect a thrust washer to be a washer and not a C ring.

Does that make any sense?

I Know they are not still in the cases here are some pics for reference. It's my understanding that a thrust bearing is supposed to keep the crank from having side to side (lateral) play. With the crank in place in the case it is a near perfect fit and no room really for any kind of bearing where it looks like one would go.

Looks like Suzuki just made the crank a damn good fit that year.

.002in is about right, yes, but it's not the smallest set you want - it's the thinnest shells. If memory serves that's the green code.
I note from the parts diagram the thrust bearings are as usual in the top case...have you looked there ? and yes, they are "C" shaped.

I have struck one 750 in the past without separate thrust bearings. Don't know if it was early or late model. If side clearance is within spec without separate thrusts, all good.
