Hi everyone . I have purchased a gs550 1977 that has been sitting for 5 years , had to rebuild almost everything . It was running after I performed all the repairs ,all of a sudden 1 coil stopped working . I replaced the points and condensors , still no change . I purchased a used coil from a salvage yard (here is where it gets weird) still no spark when the motor cranks on it's own , but when I manually move the point set for that coil it will fire on the timing light 2/3rds of the time. Reset the gap on the point set 3 times. Then that coil stopped working all together after about 5 minutes. Got another coil from the salvage yard and this one did not work at all . All the while the other coil on the bike is still working (firing ) fine,I switched the main wire to the coils thinking it may be the piont set ,but the good coil fired fine on the opposite point set. Could I have gotten 2 bad coils from the salvage yard? I would like to go dyna coil replacements , but now my problem is I need to know the primary resistance (in ohms) of the original coils and the tests I perform to find the resistance does not jive with anything. Replacement coils come in 1.5 ohms,2.2ohms,3.0ohms 5.0 ohms but my readings are 8.5 and 9.5ohms???
it is suggested by Dynatech that a 10% +or- is recomended. Can anyone enlighten me (been working 2 years on this and restoration project)
Thanks Ron

The green 3 ohm coils will work, they will allow you to upgrage to dyna ign later. Stock coils for points are 5 ohms. I have dyna green on my 79GS850. although I have added a 2 ohm balast resistor it is not mandatory.
Check your wiring make sure you have 12 volts on both coils & at the points (with the points blocked open)

thank you

thank you

Thank you Sq dancer for the Ohms info , no one could tell me that info, even at bike shops . Yes I do have 12v at the coils , I am thinking (hoping) I just got 2 bad coils in a row . Now I can order the correct Dyna coils. Thanks Beerman\\:D/

first post and used wrong word

first post and used wrong word

I meant ? what is the primary OHMS RATING at the coil , (a little nervous I guess , first post and all) . I think Sqdancer knew what I meant , thanks again

Watch that the replacement coils you try are not from a CDI ignition. these coils will overheat and burn out if used for a point-style ignition. They will also usually provide only a very weak spark.

A point coil is designed for a 25-50% duty cycle, it has current flowing through it 1/4 to 1/2 the time. A CDI coil is built for almost instantaneous current flows, just before firing the plug. The extra current from a points system will kill a CDI coil pretty quickly.

3-7 ohms is the common a range for a primary in a point system - if you are seeing 8 on your old coil, that's not outrageous. If you are seeing any current at all, and no crossover to the secondary, and a decent secondary resistance (16K to 25K), the coil is probably OK. If, when you run the bike, (or leave the ignition on, one coil will be energized) the coil gets too hot to touch & then quits after a few minutes - you are probably abusing a CDI coil.

Good luck.
