1978 Gs 1000 E stator question

This stator is cooked !! Its literally black !!

Guess why?

It is the result of a Shunt R/R shorting the thing to reduce it's output. This only works if the bike can carry away the heat that is produced.

Depending upon how big your engine is, how much oil you have in it, how you are riding it, etc... it may or maynot be able to get rid of the heat and avoid turning the stator int oa crispy critter.

The SERIES R/R acts like a light switch and just turns disconnects the stator from the electrical system (inside the R/R). That way the stator just doesn't produce power, as there is no load to dump it into.

This is teh difference between SHUNT and SERIES R/R's

Get a SERIES SH-775

Makes sence !! Thanks for taking the time to explain that to me ... as for how I ride

FULL THROTTLE IN EVERY GEAR !!

That puts the most stress on the cooling system and the most stress on the stator.

Reagrdless off the colour of the 3 wires coming from the stator , they are all the same thing ???
Stator that was installed had a green wire , yellow wire & a blue/white ..
New stator all 3 wires are yellow .. so just need to sauder together old colour coated leads to yellow wires and heat shrink over joints ? Am I correct ?

Yes, indeed

Edit; you are eliminating any headlight loop, right?? all 3 stator wires going to the R/R without detours.

At the moment I am just testing the used stators I picked up .. ontario cycle salvage , took the time with me to search through all his stock , he gave me 3 stators that all look new , for $50 ... im just installing stator in cover to run bike so I can test all 3 to see which I get the best ac volts from at the moment ..

Woowhooo 2 of the 3 stators all checked out good ! Measuring a-b , b-c, c-a while keeping revs at 4000 rpm my numbers were all 64 volts ac on one stator and 66 volts on the 2 nd stator ... both had zero resistance .... so looks like I have a spare stator

You're getting there, looking forward to see how it all comes out.

Thx ... just wondering ? Of these 2 stators which one should I use ? The one that tested a little higher or the onethat tested a little lower ?

If they look the same, then the one that tested a little higher.

Either one would probably do OK. You really wont know for sure until the system is under load.

Whichever one looks the least burnt.

Neither looked burnt !! Just finnished wiring up the stator .. used the one that tested higher , both stators were identical , so I guess I have a spare ...
I guess I wouldnt be so lucky and this size stator would fit my 650 too ??
78 , gs1000 is running and charging !!
To all that assited , Cant express enough thanks !!

Yes it is unfortunate that it doesn't appear as if he tested leg to ground voltages (poor man's megger test).

post your quick test results for confirmation.

Did the test twice and my numbers were differant each time ..
Just went to basement and got my new multimeter , did the test twice again and these numbers were consistent close both tests , give or take a volt or 2 ..

You either have very bad R/R connections (probably bad grounds) or a failing stator.

Do the Revised Phase A tests at 5000 RPM.

What are the voltage drops?

BTW the second measurement does not make any sense. Is your headlamp on?

Check my new readings pls . Seems as though my cheep multimeter doesnt give me accurate numbers if meter is rested on bike . Just did test over twice with girlfriend writing numbers down while holding meter , used my new meter which was in the basement .
