Rock On!

Does this "Rock" your memory DUDE!

It does! Interesting to note is that you started out by saying you lost your mind completely in the very first part there. Now look what happened to me :)

Thx again for sharing. And yes my bike WILL run again someday :?

..and the difference is...mine still runs just fine..I am just doing some cosmetics.....well, maybe some gaskets and stuff too :)

Well it's that time of year again, and as expected, it has taken a toll on my wallet! As well as project funds so in order to get this finished by spring I have once again changed the game plan. Back to the original plan again.

I am not going to do any cam work. We are going to put the stock cams back in and button her up. Work on the head and the top end should be finished some time in January and I hope to have it back in the bike and running by late February.

I may not have the greenbacks to paint it this year but at this point I do not care anymore. I just want my GS back! I haven't owned a running GS the entire time I have been a member here! Enough of that.

Anyway, just though I would post that update.

Oh and I also forgot to mention in answer to the earlier discussion about the possible cracked cylinder wall. It is just the photo somehow. We checked it out and she is good to go :)

Cam Upgrade Back On!

Cam Upgrade Back On!

It would appear that the madness marches on! But it?s all good I promise. My cam upgrade is back on. It seems that I will be getting an awesome set of authentic Pops Yosh Stage II cams for my engine now. :D

I spoke with Joe and he already has what we need to do the job and the engine itself has already been built for these perfect drop in parts!

Now my issue is the carbs. Due to the duration of these babies I may not have enough vacuum to operate the 34mmcv carbs we were going to use on this engine. I am not holding my breath for a pair of smooth bores even though that is what we really would want because they are too costly for me at this time. Joe is going to dig around the warehouse and see if he can find a set of fat vm carbs that will work as they will be better than these cv?s if they don?t work out.

Anyhow, WooHoo!

Oh yeah BTW, thanks Katman  :D

You got to be pulling my leg with over 5000 post's.

I'd be trying to shoe horn a lawnmower engine in there.

Good Luck for next year.

Seems I have even more good news. I have also found a set of 33mm Smoothies for this project now as well 8)

All I can say is, "you meet some of the nicest people on the GSR"

The cams and carbs are going to set me back a few bucks but this is something I must do. Even if the paint has to wait. I want this baby to scream! And I am determined to have it break triple digits on the dyno!

Rock on :D

Yes that is the plan. I want my mechanicals done by then. If time and money permit for some of the cosmetics to be finished as well then great! If not, I am riding GS style next year either way!

I am very thankful for my little 550 but one year of being stuck to nothing other than a small bike is enough! I want my liter bike back!

As with all things it seems, if I can just find more time and money I'll be able to finish it the way I see it in my mind.

I could ask what is in your mind...but that may be toooo scary :)

I am leaving the mechanicals on mine as is, the makeover is cosmetic and new gaskets to replace 20 year old ones (head and valve stem seals mainly).

Mark...you must be kidding..haven't owned a..running one yet? BOY I thought MY projects were getting out of hand!
A note on the raised floor on the ports. My understanding was that when you have air flowing thru a port it is best not to turn too sharply as the airflow can "stall" & turn into a turbulent flow.
The best example I heard of was the huge exaust ports on the then newly developed Ford 351C with the 4bbl type head. . The port floor had to turn a virtual right angle to mate to an exaust manifold that could be 'tucked' into an engine bay without consuming too much space. As it happened this sharp turn stalled the air & made the bottom half of the port useless & racers soon learned to fill in the bottom half.

Skip, if you land yourself that close to me you better find a little time to stop in :)

Depending on where in Drums Mapquest says it is about 80 miles from me.
I sent you a PM with a link in it. If you could find time to stop in and say hi I would love that! Hope it works out. If so, just let me know in advance so I can be sure that I will be around. You may need me to unlock the garage if you need to take the 550

I had posted this in the "125 HP Possible" thread that Richard started and realized I never listed this stuff in the thread about my own bike. So just for the record and so I have it listed at least once in here, this is what we are doing to my 78 1000 and what is the expected outcome yet to be seen.

Wiseco Big bore kit 1085
Port & polished head
Heavy valve springs
Raise compression 1 point
Pops Yosh Stage II Cams
33mm Smooth bore carbs
Exhaust port work (the velocity dam)
Balanced and welded crank
Heavy duty clutch & welded clutch basket
All new bearings
Dyna coils and ignition
V&H 4 into 1 Megaphone
K&N Pods

Several other little things non-engine like balancing the rims etc...

I am hoping for triple digits with that setup. Joe wont make promises on that but tells me that we should hit between 101 and 109 range with it.

It could do better (I sure hope it does) but Joe said not to expect it.

I will be securing the cams and carbs hopefully later this month and if that works out as planned the engine should be in the bike and on the dyno for break in by early to mid February.

I sure hope it works out as planned this time. I want to be riding my GS this summer. The frame in my garage thinks I have abandoned it by now I am sure. I need to stick the motor back in it soon :)

Plans are Feb at this time.

I just received word that my Yosh Stage II cams and my 33mm smoothies are both on their way to me :)

I am being told that work on my head will be complete sometime later next week.

If all goes well I could possibly have a running engine by months end :D

WooHoo!

I need to get on the stick with the paint! 8O
