    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

1978 GS1000E hardware kit - any ideas

Folks,

I have a 1978 GS1000E and I would like to replace a majority of the fasteners.

I know that a few companies make stainless engine bolt kits, however, does anyone have a kit for all of the frame/fork/etc hardware?

Just curious...
 
Not that I've seen.Would be pretty expensive and you know what we are like:D
 
Spend some time at your local metric hardware supplier. They have most everything.
 
Be careful about putting stainless bolts in high-stress areas, they are not the proper item to use.

They will be great for holding the covers on the engine and things like that, but not for engine mounts.

Sorry that they are all dirty but all of my bikes get ridden and I don't spend all day on a keyboard talking about them. These are not stock photos. I just took them. ;)
(Three different bikes here and none of them have the stock HP)















I keep all of these SS fasteners in stock and no, they are not cheap. Most are made in Germany. ;)
 
Stainless bolts are perfectly acceptable as engine mounts. There are enough of them to prevent any significant stress on any of them.
Inox fasteners in the UK used to do a complete bike replacement kit for the GS, but I'm not sure if they do anymore. They do engine kits and specialize in motorcycles so they will have all you need. I buy all my s/s fasteners from them

Check out McMaster-Carr. I bought my carb hardware from them, it's pretty cheap if you buy larger quantities. I think 10 bucks or so for packages of 50, vs 2-5 dollars per bolt at Ace. I ended up with enough to send a fee kits out to fellow GSers for a song.
 
I actually live 30min away from McMaster Carr and I work near there, too...

It's much more cost effective to go through McMaster or Fastenal - the only reason I was hoping there was a kit was so I didn;t have to buy bolts peacemeal - I was hoping to get everything in one shot.

I am currently converting the engine over to all stainless socket cap screws and the chassis bolts will be zinc-plated flange head metric 10.9 fasteners.
 
I know that there are varying opinions about where it is suitable to use stainless fasteners, and I'd like to save that question for another day. But I would like to put the question another way round.

Where, on a 30 year old bike, should you never use stainless fasteners, and why?
