A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

1978 GS750 project stalled for 15 years

ValorSolo

Forum Newbie
I bought a GS many years ago and started the project of resto-modding it.
Spent quite a bit of time and money on it. And had a lot of fun tinkering on it.
I won't go into too much detail, but parts were misplaced by someone "helping".
So out of frustration, I put the bike in storage, pretty much ignoring it for 15 years.
Last year, I bought a Royal Enfield Hunter 350. Began modding it into a Scrambler.
Well, that project is nearly complete and is turning out fantastically well. I love it.
That's flared my interest in maybe restarting the GS bike project. Maybe very soon.
I don't really know where this road ends, but a complete tear down is where I'd start.t
Cerakote everything. Then start reassembling. Research and modding as I go.

A little about me. I'm old. I rode in my youth, then a couple decades of not riding.
Then I started back riding last year. Part timer and short rides.

I'll either post back with updates, or leave the bike in storage a few more years.
But usually, when I get an itch, I'm going to scratch it.

If anyone would like details on the RE Scrambler, I'll be happy to share.
Just point me to the appropriate section to post about other bikes.

G'Day from Melbourne Australia.

Your experience with the GS is similar to mine. I bought a 1980 GS 1000 G in 2011 with the intention of cleaning it up and adding a few mods, then just ride.

One sunny Sunday afternoon, I pulled the seat off to do some cleaning. Big mistake. After that, many other parts came off and soon the engine was out. Long story short, it sat disassembled until May 2023 when I decided it was time to get back onto it.

From 2011 until 2023, life got in the way with work etc. Now that I'm retired (old guy here) I have the time and resources to get back to what I really like doing, wrenching. Or as we say here in Australia "Spanner Bashing".

Now that Autumn has returned to Australia, I can get back into my little workshop and finish the job. Way too hot in here during our summer to spend any decent time in my workshop.

It just needs to paintwork done and it’s ready for the road.

If your interested in seeing the job so far, take a look at this YouTube vid. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jfd0PYrlXpA

Coincidentally, I too have been eyeballing some RE models.

How about some pics of the GS and the RE.

Cheers

G'Day to you as well. Nice vid and very nice job on the clean up.
It was already a beautiful bike. Look forward to seeing it finished.

Sorry, I don't think I have pics of the GS anymore. I'll try to get some.

I have plenty of pics of the RE. I snap them every time I mod it. LOL.
I'll post some in the "other bike" section, or whatever it's called.
