Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

hello,

I am noticing a large amount of battery acid overspill on a brand new battery

i tossed the battery and bought an expensive ballistic dry battery to "solve" the problem

I am now told that these bikes habitually cooked batteries and am worried about my performance battery being overcharged

does anyone have any experience with issues with this charging system?

Yeah, we can tell that you are new. :-k

The charging system is the one weak spot on these bikes. Not sure what you are calling a "ballistic battery", but that won't fix the overcharging. You will need to change the Rectifier and the Regulator. The recommended one is a combination unit that is designed for a Polaris utility vehicle and will run you about $80. The recommended battery is an AGM-type battery that will also run about $80, but can occasionally be found online for a bit less.

hello,....

Welcome to GSR.

Could tell you a lot.
Many folks here can tell you a lot.

First thing: You need a volt meter, multimeter, any inexpensive on will do.
I noticed in your description you didn't mention any voltage readings.

Second thing: You need a voltmeter to check the charging system. Then we can discuss more.

Third thing: WIth a voltmeter you can check the charging system, following either "A quick Check" or the "stator papers". (Will post links here shortly).
Maybe you have failed regulator/rectifier, or maybe bad connections.

Stator papers troubleshooting flow chart can be found here
http://www.thegsresources.com/gs_garage.htm

"A Quick Check" can be found by searching for any post by "Posplayr" to find his link to this posting of his

Tell us what you find.

Did anyone mention you need a voltmeter and need to check the VOLTAGES when bike is running??

Also.. if you continue to run the bike with overly HIGH voltage, which is what I also suspect... you will burn out headlight, tail light, all the other bulbs and possibly FRY your ignitor and maybe more....
read the links above!

The good news here is that since his bike is a '79, there is no ignitor.

All of the other electrical 'stuff' is still fair game, though.

montij also has a split Rectifier and Regulator that is going to need replacement with a modern integrated series R/R, some modification is required. As well as abandoning the headlight loop, two stator wires need to be abandoned. Off the top of my head I believe one yellow and one white/blue will not be necessary, unless the stator needs to be replaced, than the extra wires from the stator are a moot point, there will only be three to deal with.

Thanks for all the replies

when I bought the bike the battery would not charge at all so I ripped the rectifier off
my 1978 parts bike and immediately my readings indicated the battery was indeed being charged
the voltage readings are within range idling the bike... I'm looking into the replacement unit that regulates all 3 phases

...........

Ah, you do have voltmeter. Good.

Bike at idle, the charging system will not put out much at all.
Need to check at mid rpms, like 4 - 5K. Could be overcharging there.
