Trying to bring a dead 1979 GS850 back to life and having trouble with timing.
Set the timing and points correctly, got it running (although idling way too high), then ever since the timing has been way out.
Starting over by setting the timing on cylinders 1&4, the spark fires when the timing mark is aligned with the 1 (just before the F) even though I’ve adjusted the timing plate to the maximum range of adjustment (ie rotated it clockwise until it won’t go any further).
My next thought was maybe the mechanical advance component behind the timing plate is potentially jammed in the advance position. Does that sound likely? Anyone have any similar experience or offer any suggestions if I’m missing something?
