    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Not sure about the settings on the petcock. I have a lot of fuel running out of the carbs while its sitting. What is the orientation of the screw for on off and prime?
 
Might have to get confirmation from someone who has one, but I believe that the position shown is ON, or RUN.

Turned vertical is PRIme, but, unlike other petococks, it does take a "puff" of vacuum to get it going in PRIme, after which it will keep flowing until turned horizontal.

Like all GS1000, and every other GS I know of, there is no off. Vertical is prime, horizontal is off. Prime isn't really prime either, because it STILL takes engine vacuum to turn it on. It is suposed to stay on once it starts to flow in prime, but it may or may not depending on if the valve sticks (mine did, so I put a brand new one on which also sticks). If yours is in that position and it is leaking gas from the carbs when sitting, , the petcock is probably bad.
 
There is a check valve built into the back cover which holds the prime actuated once it sees some vacuum suction. Seems simple enough but not the most reliable setup. New OEM petcocks are about $75, or aftermarket equivalents are $50. I have a spare if you get stuck and can't find one.

BTW, the factory suzuki service manual has a ditty on how the petcock works. Look in the 1980 supplement section. Free download on Basscliff's website.
 
A quick fix is to put an inline plastic Briggs and Stratton shutoff valve between the petcock and the carbs. I detest vacuum petcocks even when they function as designed.

Great for test tanks too, and I also install them on Briggs engines which don't have them, such as my riding mower.
 
I actually adjusted it this way. It was sitting between vertical and horizontal. I set it just before the pic and we shall see if I get another puddle tonight.

You probably will. You should check and make sure you're not flooding your crankcase with that gas.

Yeah,why don't you be cautious and disconnect fuel line at petcock, add temp line and run that into some container, like your lawn mower tank - then check in morning.Petcocks often malfunction.

........................... i have a vacuum petcock on a 1980gs1000e ,,,,, on prime if you have cranked the motor a few times it will stay open ,,, it should be turned to the horizontal position once your bike is running ... otheywise it could flood .... regards oldgrumpy :D
