1980 GS 450L, Shifter Side Oil Leak

Everybody,

First off, thanks for all the help with my previous post which has somehow now mysteriously disappeared (so if this looks remarkably familiar, its not Deja Vu).

The bike is a 1980 GS 450L with about 9000 miles on it. It runs good when its running. I just rebuilt the carburetors, replaced the intake pipes, intake pipe o-rings and fuel and air hoses which fixed the high idle problem (probably an air leak). There still remains the separate problem of the oil leak coming from the left side of the bike in the area of the shifter. There is a lot of oil condensed around the bottom left side of the engine and it slowly drips from the area where the foot shifter connects to the gears onto the frame. Its been doing this since I bought the bike (six or eight months ago) but is getting much worse. At this point there is no oil in the crankcase. (BTW, any suggestions on good oil for an older low mileage bike?).

On the previous post, some suggested the leak was likely coming from the clutch pushrod seal or another seal in the area (I forgot which one). So if everybody who gave me the great info last time around, could post the same, I would be forever indebted. This time I'll print everybody's responses.

Thanks,

Noah

Pull the cover, clean the engine with simple green or gunk (or similar), start engine and look for leak source.

For oil, desiel engine oil is good for motorcycles. 15W-40 is common weight (good for summer). Use regular 10w-40 for winter.

I have the same problem with mine. I couple of people I know who ride older bikes suggested putting in one quart of "high mileage" oil when I do the oil change to help stop the leak. Its worth a try...never given them any trouble.

clutch push rod, shifter shaft seal, or countershaft seal. not fun but possible to change without splitting the cases.

total BS that its easy to get out.

i just spent an hour and its only 1/2 out and mangled to sh*t.

i even tried the two wood screws method, first.

i want to throw this bike off a cliff.

on top of that you have to take the chain off to get to the other nut on the retaining clip

any ideas, people?

I replaced both the shift lever and clutch pushrod seals on my old 450. Hardest part for me was getting off the sprocket nut and the nut on the clutch hub.

The seal will get mangled but no worry. I used a screw driver to dig the seals out. I also took the shift lever rod out first - comes out from the clutch side.

Takes some time but the whole job is no harder than adjusting the valves for example - my opinion of course.

The thing is, without the team of crack commandos at the GS resources I would be broke spending a small fortune at the shop, the bike would still be in pieces, I would have rolled it off a cliff like scooter fox (above), or some combination of all of the above. Having said that, can one of you benevolent souls tell me which part is the shifter shaft seal, clutch pushrod seal, countershaft seal, etc. on the microfische:

Thanks guys

Shifter seal suzuki part no:09285-12002 (part 27 on the gear shift diagram)

Countershaft seal is between 2, I can't help you there, but here are the 2 parts:
09283-32019 OIL SEAL (32x62x8F) 1 FLANGED TYPE
09283-32015 OIL SEAL (32x62x7J-1)
Part #34 on the transmission diagram.

2 Clutch pushrod seals here too:
09283-06002 OIL SEAL (6x34x8_) 1 FLANGED TYPE (Darn smilies :p)
09285-06011 OIL SEAL (6x34x7x10) 1 WITH HOLDER
Part #20 on the clutch diagram.

I changed 2 shifter seals in about an hour. they aren't too bad to do once you've done one. Haven't had the pleasure of the others yet, but I bet they could use at least one more each....
