Hi I recently bought an 1980 gs L in pieces, not really sure what the original problem was because the previous owner died. I got the engine sorted out but I'm thinking the original problem was with the carbs keihin cvk 32 mm with the black caps. I can't for the life of me get them mounted back to the engine. I don't know what that thing is bolted to the cylinder head under the # 2&3 carbs but the bottom of the #3 bowl is hitting it keeping the carbs from pulling all the way in. I've tried swapping bowls around but that hasn't worked. I don't have a manual and the Internet is useless. I'm looking for pictures or some advice to figure this out. Thanks in advance.

That "thing" is the cam chin tensioner. Probably a good idea to have one, but aftermarket manual tensioners are a lot smaller.

Which L do you have? The internet isn't useless, you just haven't found the right place yet. Actually you are getting close.....

Anyway..heres the carb rebuild tutorial. we recommend, strongly, a full 24 hr soaking to be sure the internal passages are clean. Lots of carb spray and air to flush them after dipping.

Get the CV rebuild kit here and ask for drain orings as well. See page 3 of the site for the explanationas to failure of the intake manifold orings and why its important they be replaced also.

Lastly, there will be rubber plugs over the pilot jets once you remove the bolws. they must be replaced or they will leak andmake all kinds of trouble with running rich and fouling plugs etc etc.

Was typing and didnt see second pic. Should mount the intake with the new orings to the head and then insert the carbs into the intakes. I take a heat gun and warm the rubbers up so they stretch easier for inserting the carbs. A thin wipe of lube on the engine side of the carb throats helps too.

They came in a box with some other parts. No air box. They are ganged together and seem like they will fit except for the bowl hitting the chain tensioner. Any clue if this is an upgrade or just the wrong carbs? The guy only had one buke so I'm assuming they were mounted at some point in time but maybe not

OH..and be sure that you put the intakes in the right spots as well. There are allen screws in them for adapter for the sync gauges to hook up to. The two left ones will have the ports at the lower left as your looking at them from the seat area. The two right ones will have the ports at the lower right side of the intakes.

Put the intakes on first and then see if the carbs line up with them when on the engine would be my first move. If the throats seem to line up..does the bowl then hit off the cam chain tensioner??

Thanks yea the intake boots are set up correctly. What's your professional option? Am I outta luck with these carbs? Should I just start looking for a new set ? Everything lines up good the only problem so far is the #3 bowl hitting the tensioner

Intakes are original bolt right on no problem. If I took tensioner off then carbs would bolt up perfectly

I was just looking at the cylinder head fiche and i am wondering if they are the stock intakes as well. Has been a while since i have worked on an 80 850, but I am not so sure they are offset like your seem to look in the picture. Take a look here and see what you think..not saying yours are wrong. Someone will for sure come along to verify them soon I am sure.

Buddy has a 82 850 I can look at tomorrow if you like.
