    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

1980 GS1000ET carb setting question

Hi there,

I bought a 1980 GS1000ET and the carbs needed some work. So the mechanic working on the carbs cleaned them, blew the jets and checked the diaphrams. He doesn't have a manual for the bike so he doesn't know the stock settings. How many truns for the pilots screws? He thinks he needs to wind back 1.5 times but not sure.

Any help would be much appreciated. I'm not very mechanically inclined so you'll have to bare with me here. The person working on the bike doesn't even have a pc so here I am posing the question on his behalf. If you need more info, please let me know.

If everything else has been done correctly, adjust your mixture screws to achieve the highest rpm.
Place the bike on the centerstand, warm it up completely/hot.
Set idle to about 1,000/1,100 rpm's by adjusting the idle adjuster knob.
Starting with any carb, slowly turn the mixture screw in either direction until you hear the rpm's max. Fine tune the setting. Now re-adjust the idle down to 1,000/1,100 with the idle adjuster knob.
Repeat this to the other 3 carbs.
The screws will generally be between 1 1/4 to 2 turns out on a stock motor. If they end up much less or much more, then you have pilot circuit mixture problems.

I am confused on which screw is which. And which order to do things.
Can someone please help?

My bike will not idle unless its in middle choke.

1) Do I adjust the idle screws until I can get it to idle without the choke? and then fine tune the idle further?

2) Where are the idle screws? I am assuming they are different than the 3 throttle adjustment screws and air screws.

Screw locations and if you have separate pilot air/fuel screws or mixture screws only, depends on what year/model you have.

Yeah I just realized I never put my bike on my post! Duh

my 1982 GS850L is running lean and will only run on half choke. I want to adjust the mixture screws but am always retiscesnt on messing with thing I have little knowledge about.

The only 4 screws I see are needles with springs and an o-ring just before the carbs go into the carb boots. Is that the correct screw?

Sounds like the mixture screws. Just before the carb boots, engine side, directly on top. Turning them out will richen the mixture. If your bike has a stock intake follow my first post to this topic. Record where your screws are so you can set them back if you want. You could also have a dirty pilot circuit, etc, but try the screw adjustment first. Let us know if it works.
