A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

1980 GS1000G Rebuild / Update/ Help

Hi Guys,
I finally got my GS1000G back together after replacing the cam dog seal in the bottom half. While out of the frame, I went ahead and replaced all gaskets and seals for the entire engine. I did not remove the buckets on the springs and do anything with the valve springs, I only checked the shims and adjusted them to the right size. The timing is correct, I check it 3 times and did several rotations before putting the cover back on.

Now that everything is back together I am attempting to start the bike, it turns and turns never to fire. I checked the plugs I have spark and I'm spraying starter fluid into the carbs with no airbox. I'm just trying to get it to fire. I'm thinking back to everything I did to this motor, I feel like I put everything back together correctly with help from the manual.

Am I forgetting something? When I spray starter fluid into the carbs, I hear it hissing like it trying to spark. Maybe I've done something and it doesn't have compression?
Looking for answers for a newbie with his first engine rebuild. It's probably something simple.....
Thanks a million.

Cam timing 180 degrees out?

BTW, you should have replace the valve stem seals.

I can always go back in and replace the valve stem seals.
Secondly what do you mean 180 degrees out?

I lined up the timing marks, I pulled the cam chain tight from the front. Inserted the EX gear and lined 1 pointing at / slightly down at the valve cover gasket. Then counting the pins including the pin located above #2, 20 pins back to 3.

Question, there are two "T" marks on this thing. The first T is after the "F" and the second "T" is all the way 180 degrees. Which do I use?

That was it, timing was off. I had it on the wrong "T", needs to be on the "T" for 1-4 cyl
