    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

1980 GS750L Fork Disassembly question

Hi Folks,
Been a while since I've posted. hope someone can help.

I am working on a 1980 GS750L. One fork is bent, so I called Fork's by Frank and they are sending me a new set. Not a bad deal, and quick.

I've removed the stock (bent) forks. I'm disassembling (sp?) them. Got the tubes out of the sliders, as well as the fork seals etc etc. No problems there.
However, at the bottom end of the fork slider (the top/thinner fork tube), there is an internal bushing and a lock ring (?) of some sort, with a hole that is drilled through the fork slider and a matching hole on the bushing (which are not lined up and I can't seem to line them up, if that even matters). Does anyone know how I can remove this internal bushing and lock ring so I can install them in the new forks?
I don't see that part listed on the microfiche, so I can't even show a pic of it.

Got a camera? You say it's at the bottom of the top piece or the bottom piece?
 
Here's a diagram.... which piece? Is it in the bottom of the top tube or lower tube?

Hi Renobruce,

Well, unfortunately, as I mentioned in my post, the part I'm talking about is not on the microfiche.

The part(s) in question are part of the slider/top tube, part#23 in the fiche.
It is located INTERNALLY, at the bottom end of the tube. If you see where bushing#22 (fiche) would slide on to the notch at the bottom of the tube, the part I'm talking about is located inside the tube, just below this bushing but, again, inside the tube.
I've never seen anything like this before.
I'll take some pics and post them.

Hi Renobruce and anyone else reading this.

I got the new forks by Frank's and the part was talking about was, thankfully, already installed. It ends up it's a valve, sort of like the gold emulators. Looks like the stock one is not meant to be removed. i may be wrong.

So, next question, would anyone happen to know the fork oil spec (fluid oz.) that these forks require? (1980 GS750L).
